The first time I heard something like this I was 22 and just happened to walk into a cathedral while in France. They were only practicing and it literally stopped me in my tracks. It was like heaven opened up. How did Catholics trade this for what sounds like bad 70s music?

Humanity only survives if it matches every advancement in technology with a deepening of the soul. Without clarity about ethics, without sensitivity to truth and beauty, we will quickly lose ourselves in a heartless hellscape of digital minds. Teach the humanities and the arts.

Eighty years ago today, American forces liberated Dachau, the longest operating Nazi concentration camp. Scenes of the aftermath are among those captured by Hollywood director George Stevens, who led a special unit of the U.S. Army Signal Corps, in rare color footage of WWII. 🧵

i am once again begging humanities professors to understand what this thing is actually doing and write about its outputs in a rigorous and critical way. it is genuinely embarrassing that you all continue to write as if the computer is thinking and talking

“The much discussed AI-2027 scenario, for example, predicts in passing that by the end of 2025 (eight months from now!), there will be AIs that have “a PhD-level knowledge of every field”. I often get the sense that many of the people who make those kinds of predictions have no idea what constitutes expert-level knowledge or expert-level capacities in any field except, possibly, computer science. With these kinds of statements being tossed around casually, it is salutary to remind people that AIs facing problems from various fields make some mistakes that even human beings who are entirely ignorant of the field could avoid, and make many mistakes that a human (such as myself) with only casual knowledge could avoid.” — @ErnestSDavis, in an analysis of fairly easy but novel problem that ChatGPT-4-mini-high gets mediocre marks, source below.

Abraham Lincoln's funeral train passed through Hyde Park, New York, on April 25, 1865. Local lore has it that his "ghost train" passes through the town every night on the anniversary. A historical marker commemorating this folklore was unveiled at the site on April 24, 2025.
