This year, four companies will spend roughly $730 billion building AI. The only law aimed squarely at what they’re building is a California statute asking them to post their safety plans online.🧵

Do not be the kind of person who fears victory.
To make any changes to the bill, you either need 60 votes or a unanimous consent agreement in the Senate. If Dems take control of Congress and want to pass a data center moratorium next year, they should do that. To become law of course, Trump would have to sign it. BAAJA is a bill with a real chance of passage before the end of the year that reduces climate emissions and supercharges the green energy buildout. Trump has indicated he will sign it. It’s a good deal and Dems should take it. If they want to do more later if/when they control Congress, they should do that too. This is how progress is made.

Perhaps one might identify a misaligned incentive structure, which in turn might be alleviated by a solution of the need to turbo forward with raw capability at all costs.
Seems bad that AI company leaders are currently more scared of Jensen than of Congress!

This seems like the kind of thing the American people might harbor many opinions about

One of the many definitive things that was alluded-to but quite underexamined. I also in general think Billy broadly speaking better understood the role he was playing both before and after.
Underdiscussed element of You Can See Everything discourse: Holmes was 1 month postpartum while filming and preparing to go to prison for a decade

This is, to state the obvious, a good idea.
The Department of Homeland Security is requiring all civilian federal agencies to remove DeepSeek products and 'any third-party services developed using DeepSeek implementations,' and to stop buying them.

But really though people love to define “moderation” as “something other than adopting policies that achieve outcomes which the bulk of the electorate prioritizes, in defiance of obvious ideological orthodoxy,” even though that’s all it is.

Highly recommend coming to work with @victoriahoued at Ready State Labs. No more exciting stake capacity organization anywhere, led by one of the awesomest people you will ever encounter in any context. readystatelabs.org/Careers

Nothing makes less sense than this. What we have paid off is a *mortgage*, which is a totally distinct thing than a property tax levied against the value of the asset the mortgage underwrites.
“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century. politico.com/news/magazine/2…

Matt’s point (as I wrote about earlier this year) is hugely underappreciated: Trump Accounts make possible massive at-scale investment in the American people that simply was not even conceivable before.
Backed by the US Treasury, the financial infrastructure to do this at national scale is now in place and fully operational.

Since the Shockley days Silicon Valley has viewed the sanction of democratic legitimacy at best as this annoying albatross to be considered eventually, and at worst as an obstacle to be yeeted out the window. But the bell always winds up tolling for thee.
Silicon Valley policy on AI (1) freedom to develop at rapid pace a techology we do not truly understand, (2) whose potentially dire implications we cannot predict, (3) in the service of "transhuman" values that cannot be adequately specified.

Approximately everyone is sleeping on Bobby, Dems’ literal rock star candidate.
I’ve seen a lot of congressional events. I’ve never seen something like Bobby Pulido’s rally tonight.

My wife, who could not be less interested in EITHER crypto event whatever-things OR the Ole Miss football game on last night, wants everybody to know that the Pubkey buffalo wings are *extremely* good and underappreciated.

The Fielder doc fails to ask of itself and its own motivations the most important questions it provokes - and as such falls short of its generational masterpiece reputation - but is still one of the two or three best films of the year.

This is one of the main reasons why the “race” framing is so often actively misguided: there are very many reasons to believe us going faster also mechanically makes China go faster.
Distillation has always been part of the explanation for why China is so close behind the U.S. in model benchmark performance. But one of my updates after joining openai is that distillation probably plays a bigger role in the explanation than I realized.

One thing that’s interesting is how many explanations of this involve “well, there was poor security.” Yes, the present state of ubiquitous very poor security is one of the more relevant risk vectors!
I think this was an interesting point to make but has aged incredibly badly with three significant likely AI-enabled cyberattacks in the ten days since it was posted. reuters.com/world/suspect-be… , npr.org/2026/10/15/nx-s1-600…,

Often lost amidst the AI Safety conversation are questions about what you’d regulate and why *purely if you wanted to mitigate serious ECONOMIC downside risk* for something occupying this big a fraction of the economy. “Regulate/don’t” is a straightforwardly false dichotomy.
This year, four companies will spend roughly $730 billion building AI. The only law aimed squarely at what they’re building is a California statute asking them to post their safety plans online.🧵

This is the core issue at play. All economic policy flows from the baseline conditions. The conditions of Washington DC are not the same as the conditions of the nation writ large.
One of the things that distinguishes people in JLG’s orbit is that they literally do not understand that there are differences between the optimal policy for running a 330 million person country and running a mid-sized city in a recession.
