Why should your hardware be limited by someone else's APIs or walled gardens? With Passport Prime, developers and companies can build their own apps on KeyOS, each securely sandboxed and isolated from the rest of your device. The freedom to innovate. The security to do it right. Who should build an app for Prime? Tag them 👇

I have a vivid memory from when I worked at the Apple Store in high school – was on break in the back room and one of the Geniuses came in and said that a girl spilled water all over her keyboard. He asked us to vote on whether we should cover the full costs of the repair. We all of course raised our hands to vote yes. The Genius went back out to the girl and made her day. Apple used to go by “surprise and delight” and “under promise, overdeliver”…not sure wha’s happened since then. (Also the store manager was incredible, fired up and motivated and a great mentor and leader)
Update: Apple “found” “liquid damage” in the keyboard, so tripled the price. I declined all repairs, and it was sent back. UPON RETURN, they didn’t plug my battery back in, so it now requires it to be plugged in to be on. Apple Store said nothing they can do. Pissed beyond measure, but didn’t escalate because the local repair shop will get it resolved when I do the repair with them.

Self-custody has been under attack this year but is far from dead. I just read the 3rd party security audit on my own signing hardware. There are still people in this space doing it right! “Based on this comprehensive security audit of the Passport Prime, the overall architecture demonstrates exceptional security design principles and sophisticated implementation.” Read the reports on your own signing devices (if the manufacturer commissioned one that is.) Coldcard and Ledger either didn’t do this at all or instead have trust-me-bro “internal audits”.

Going to refrain from commenting on Ledger CEO going after @MagicalTux…except that it’s the kind of comments I’d expect from someone like NVK, not the CEO of the largest HWW company.

The Next Phase of the Ledger Implant Story Could Be AI-Generated Industrial Sabotage @zherbert of Foundation warns that anyone can now use AI to generate a convincing image of a competitor’s hardware wallet with a malicious implant inside, potentially sparking widespread panic. We are entering an era where photographic evidence can no longer be taken at face value. The real test is whether a reputable expert has physically opened and inspected the device. Full interview below.
NEW POD | BITCOIN NEWS EXCLUSIVE We sit down with the man who broke the Ledger supply chain attack wide open. Mark Karpelès (@MagicalTux), former CEO of Mt. The next generation of malicious hardware wallet implants could be virtually impossible to spot. @zachherbert explains how attackers could conceal spy chips inside a device’s battery, behind its screen, or even within the plastic casing. And he warns that the Ledger attack may have been discovered before the technology reached its most sophisticated form. Watch the full interview below piped.video/-j9_EQuHEus

This is toxic and disingenuous. Tangem is misleading so many folks who don’t know better. Gaslighting the industry for years. Blind signing has a clear definition. This product is a glorified 2FA hot wallet and doesn’t protect from the most simple type of attack: a compromised phone or computer.
Hey, Chris! A screen doesn’t solve blind signing. Huge sums have been lost to transactions people approved on screens they couldn’t actually read. Please read it: tangem.com/en/blog/post/blin… Why the "no screen is bad" narrative fails By shifting key processes to the secure mobile app, Tangem’s hardware wallet doesn't need a display. The secure app handles all critical interactions and is protected by the robust security layers outlined above. This simplifies the user experience while keeping their digital assets safe. The app side is hardened separately: integrity checks against modified versions, root and jailbreak detection, tapjacking protection, certificate pinning, DexProtector, and open code on GitHub. Details here: tangem.com/en/blog/post/mobi… We compared the two approaches and chose the one we believe is safer and simpler for people to use. Ledger Cryptobilis incident shows it was the right choice: with Tangem, a story like this simply couldn’t have happened.

Only Bitcoin hardware doing everything right imo, and being increasingly validated.
Passport Prime is assembled in the USA! That matters because hardware security begins long before you switch a device on. Who assembled it? Who tested it? Who handled it before it reached you? When you’re building a device people will trust with their keys, you should know exactly where it has been and who handled it before it reached them. With Passport Prime, you do.

As I've said many times, this makes no sense and provides a false sense of security. It's a shame that so many credible voices are now advocating for clear cases. Implants will get more compact and can be trivially hidden behind/inside screens, inside batteries, or even fully replaced PCBs that appear identical. The only correct approach is intense active anti-tamper features that make it virtually impossible to open the device, alongside a mobile app or onboarding experience that requires customers to use a trusted device (like their phones) to verify the integrity of the hardware wallet.
All hardware wallets must have see-through cases in the future. 🤷‍♂️

One of my favorite recent pods. We dug into the timeline and technical aspects of the Ledger implants, and we spoke about where self custody can go from here.

If I were a Bitcoin only guy I'd probably go with @FoundationHQ's Passport Prime. The levels they go to ensure security are impressive but it's easy to use (no rolling dice.) Here's an interview the founder did. Sadly I'm not a Bitcoin only guy so there limited support for other coins is a problem for me. piped.video/watch?v=s9QYkx8r…

hacks will continue across the board if there are single points of failure, criminals will exploit them this is the hard part--upgrading your custody solution now, don't wait for another hack don't wait for bitcoin to get back to $100k to get into a more secure spot it's easier than ever to try out Multi-Institution Custody at @OnrampBitcoin, use the code HOME for $100/month for your first year also - @FoundationHQ makes secure, tamper-resistant devices so check them out and consider using the barbell approach. Self-custody + Multi-Institution Custody

Was a great pod. I first got into Bitcoin in December 2013. Would have never guessed that 13 years later I'd be on a podcast with the legendary @MagicalTux! If Mark hadn't posted about the Ledger implants, causing attackers to start draining funds, it could have been much worse
Got to chat with two guys who understand the Ledger supply-chain attack better than most. Episode with @MagicalTux and @zherbert out this week on @BitcoinNewsCom.
