"Neither prioritises preserving Israel’s Jewish character"
It's so funny how easily they give the game away. Why would parties, at least nominally focused on Arab political interests, prioritize preserving the "Jewish character" of Israel??
Many things can be true at once:
1) Record Arab voter turnout in Israel—and their potentially crucial role in forming a governing coalition—fundamentally disproves longstanding claims that Israel is an apartheid state.
2) The relevant Arab parties (Ra’am, Ta’al) largely mirror the regional Arabist-Islamist split. Neither prioritises preserving Israel’s Jewish character, and neither adequately treats Palestinian militancy as terrorism. This should be a source of considerable alarm, but it does not excuse the racist rhetoric deployed by elements of the Israeli right.
3) Significant segments of the ultra-Orthodox Ashkenazi Haredi leadership hold a deeply romanticised view of Jewish life under Arab and Ottoman rule. Many would rather live as dhimmis under Islamic rule—even at the risk of abuse, forced conversion, ethnic cleansing, or death—than legitimise a secular Jewish government, preferring to await the Messiah indefinitely rather than treat redemption as an active process.
4) This election exposes clear fault lines. Demographic trends mean a durable resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will be required before 2050.
