Academic turf war discussions are stupid because turf wars are a young man’s game.
The true differentiator in academia is not field, but quality.
A more experienced scholar appreciates a good qualitative study, a solid mathematical model, a sharp « heterodox » insight, or a well-crafted formal theory, regardless of the field.
Every time I’ve met a Nobel prize caliber scholar, before or after the prize, I’ve encountered a curious and open minded intellectual.
Every time I’ve encounter a turf war zealot, they are a young, mono-disciplinarian holding tight to their new credentials—the foundation of their identity, self-worth, and fledgling status.
To be a world class scientist you need to be the former, because if you think your discipline has a monopoly on the creation of knowledge, or of quality, you don’t know the first thing about knowledge creation.
Knowledge is non fungible. Lives are short, and science is vast and beautiful. Don’t show your naïveté by being a soldier in a turf war. 🫡
