Even with the African Catholic Church's anti-gay stance being far to the right of US conservatives, one wonders what the Catholic Church would look like today if Cardinal Sarah had become Pope.
Modern man neglects his interior life so much that he no longer knows what it means. He is submerged in the mud of passions, preoccupied with amusing himself and enjoying all the pleasures of the world. It does not matter to him that he lives in a world dominated by evil, violence, corruption, loose morals, perversion, irreligion, and even contempt for God.Exaggeration is the norm. There have always been periods in history in which sordidness, brutality, obscenity, foulness, and frenzy held the high ground. Our era is all the more disturbing in this regard because God is socially dead. This great absence is the worst possible threat for humanity. The danger is that the successor of Christian man will be amoral man.The Church absolutely must play her role. What makes her work that much more complex is the fact that the moral consensus resulting from Judeo-Christian civilization, which for centuries left its mark on the world, has disappeared. The philosophical relativism denounced by Benedict XVI has swept it all away in its deadly waves. At the opening of the 2005 conclave, he courageously declared: “We are building a dictatorship of relativism that does not recognize anything as definitive and whose ultimate goal consists solely of one’s own ego and desires.”
