🚨 Fresh from the press! We created and analyzed over 100 in vitro cyanobacterial consortia using well-characterized model cyanobacterial hosts to better understand how cyanobacteria recruit and interact with their microbiomes. Check it out: academic.oup.com/ismej/advan…
🥳🥳 Our paper using #metagenomics to explore the core species of stable #cyanobacteria #microbiome communities is now out in the @ISMEJournal!!! Excellent work by @AndrejaKust and company, and collaboration with @BanfieldLab. tinyurl.com/3cs2x6r7

🦠⚔️ Phages fight back. We analyzed >50k DNA phage genomes from soil, marine & human gut to map the viral "counter-defensome". Counter-defenses varied with family, host range, habitat & geography, and some were found in giant DNA viruses. biorxiv.org/content/10.64898…

This work wouldn’t have been possible without the leadership of @Dr__Diamond and the incredible teamwork of @jkzorz, @K_BoumaGregson, @catacruanas, and support of everyone at @BanfieldLab — thank you!

Just like your best friends at school who are always with you, certain tiny creatures always stick with some blue-green bacteria, no matter where they came from or what kind they are.

(3/4) We defined 25 species as part of the core microbiome, out of over 500 species identified in the study. Excitingly, 80% (20/25) encoded anoxygenic photosystems among other functions with implications for cooperative microbial behavior.

(4/4) One of our favorite results was identifying that the core microbiome was enriched in predicted plasmids. Some of the functions on these plasmids were also known to be essential in establishment of plant bacterial symbioses.

wooohooo! you go Lingdong!
Methane-oxidizing Methanoperedens archaea surprisingly host a constellation of Borgs, mini-Borgs, viruses, plasmids, and other mysterious extrachromosomal elements! Wonder what they are doing? Check our preprints here: tinyurl.com/yc48fhd7 tinyurl.com/bdcv576d

Here @BanfieldLab used #nanopore sequencing to study 'the nature and existence of enigmatic genetic elements' (Borgs) in soil. They assembled 7 new curated Borg genomes, revealing extensive DNA methylation that differentiates them from their host archaea, Methanoperedens. 🧵1/2
