Genome editing holds tremendous promise. However, applications that could alter the genetic inheritance of future generations demand a higher standard of scientific evidence and technical and ethical oversight. The risks extend far beyond individual human embryos and raise profound societal questions that cannot be addressed by technological capability alone. #ethics #bioethics
This @FT article highlights growing investment in human #EmbryoEditing. ISCT, alongside ASGCT and ARM, has called for a 10-year moratorium on heritable human genome editing to ensure responsible oversight. Article: buff.ly/wmjf1Nb Moratorium: buff.ly/9zAXUr4

These extraordinary mRNA cancer vaccine results didn’t happen overnight - they happened through DECADES of hard work and dedication. Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman helped make mRNA usable. Pieter Cullis et al helped develop the lipid particles that deliver it into cells. Thousands of scientists, clinicians, trial volunteers and funders have kept this work moving forward through setbacks, funding uncertainty and enormous challenges. That foundational work helped give us the mRNA platform for COVID vaccines. Now the results of this large phase 3 trial has confirmed that a personalized mRNA vaccine, added to immunotherapy, can help keep melanoma from returning. All while this technology has been demonized and scientists and public health workers have been vilified. Still - they keep working. For the ultimate benefit of society. We owe them our immense gratitude and support to keep going.

Treasury is right to try to protect national security. But we should watch for broad restrictions that could undermine our public health goals - impacting patient access to global innovation. The new policy could curtail virtually any investment in Chinese biotech operations, including establishing labs, or entering into joint ventures, thwarting opportunities to bring Chinese innovation to American patients. We need to focus equal attention on making our own process more efficient and competitive, especially Phase 1 trials and the IND stage. The discussion on this will be important. We must get this balance right and ensure Americans continue to benefit from the best global science.
IMO… it is a mistake to “try to increase U.S. competitiveness through protectionism.” The new rule “may make it easier for non-U.S. companies to succeed through manufacturing in China. This wouldn’t help our global competitiveness.” IMO… let’s instead kick ass with American ingenuity! biocentury.com/article/66129…

Maybe honesty > authenticity? "Holmes takes advantage of our societal confusion between authenticity, or speaking one’s own truth, and honesty, in which one speaks the truth."
Great piece by @matthewherper in STAT. He reminds us of some of her lies, including one she told him on stage in front of an audience statnews.com/2026/10/20/eliz… via @statnews

"A ruthless cover-up of a breathtaking fraud, and she was at the controls,”
The reporter who exposed Theranos loved the new Elizabeth Holmes documentary but says its ‘artistry’ shouldn’t obscure the fraud fortune.com/2026/10/20/john-…

So @TylerShultz_ as a Theranos whistleblower. And he wrote the piece you need to read about ‘You Can See Everything.’ Elizabeth Holmes is still lying, he says. And the filmmakers, while creating a great piece of art, fall short on looking outside the walls of her apartment to document that. One key detail: "My wife had to squeeze my arm to prevent me from jumping out of my seat in the theater and screaming, THAT IS NOT THE DEVICE." Again, that device Holmes showed? It's not the one we're talking about!!!! Having seen the film, I basically agree with Tyler's take. statnews.com/2026/10/19/eliz…

A few readers have taken me to task for “missing the point of the film,” which is apparently that Elizabeth Holmes is unknowable and everything is ambiguous. Here’s my response: She went after Tyler Shultz and Erika Cheung with everything she had. I was threatened with litigation on a daily basis for months on end. It was a ruthless cover-up of a breathtaking fraud, and she was at the controls. Just a little context for those who have forgotten or didn’t follow the original story. By the way, I loved the film. #BestPicture, IMO.

Science editor-in-chief Holden Thorpe gave the day’s first warning about the rise of science in China. He says he can see it in the papers researchers are trying to get published in the top scientific journal he edits. "Submissions from China continue to increase, not just in number but in quality, and submissions from the U.S. are going down,” Thorpe said. He later added: “The atmosphere there (China) is just so much more pro-science than it is here.” Here is a video.

Inspiring #immunology discoveries. #Science unlocks knowledge = lives saved
I asked Claude Opus 5.5 to make a 2-minute video on the history of immunology. Every frame & every note of the music was generated in code. It's really good! As an immunologist, this made me emotional. So many lives saved by vaccines, built on research we often take for granted
