At the Free Speech Union, our founding principles are to defend our members’ right to free speech and to campaign for free speech more widely.
@BenBarryJones, our Director of Case Management, explains our approach: to cause more trouble for your university, business, department or institution than the other side will if they try to silence or punish you for exercising your right to lawful free speech.
We’re successfully changing the balance of terror. It’s now harder to punish people for exercising their right to free speech, because we’ll back them to the hilt.
Only around 1% of the cases the Free Speech Union handles ever make it into the press. As of last week, we’ve fought more than 7,000 cases defending our members’ right to free speech.

ISLAM IS NOW THE LARGEST CATEGORY OF CASES HANDLED BY THE FREE SPEECH UNION.
Cases involving Islam have overtaken those concerning people penalised for expressing gender-critical beliefs.
Since the Labour Government came to power in July 2024, the number of cases involving Islam has more than doubled, said @BenBarryJones, the FSU’s Director of Case Management, at our live recording of the FSU Podcast at the Battle of Ideas.
This is astonishing in a country that abolished blasphemy laws in 2008 — 18 years ago.

A colleague was reading a copy of my book ‘Island of Strangers’ on the train home from #battlefest tonight.
The young woman sat next to her saw what my colleague was reading and then started screaming so loudly that the entire carriage fell silent.
She said “you don’t actually believe this nonsense, do you?”, shouted and then refused to stay sat next to my friend - all because of a book she was reading.
The woman didn’t even know if my @SpeechUnion colleague agreed with the book or not!
The woke left in action: so utterly intolerant they can’t even sit next to someone reading a book they don’t agree with.
