I got this message from one of our local meet-up attendees tonight: [text:] Hi Drew. I got a call earlier from someone pretending to be the police. Supposedly they made an arrest and recovered some personal information off a device. Interestingly they mentioned the Bitcoin Shop. Have you had any cyber incidents? [end quote] It’s clearly concerning that people are calling pretending to be the New Zealand police. The person hung up on my friend once he questioned a few anomalies in the details. Be warned that somebody calling about Bitcoin & cryptocurrency pretending to be the police may well be a fraud. Ask them to validate their details &/or communicate with you via email or in person rather by phone. We’ve not had any security breaches of our thebitcoinshop order information & our customer’s contact details are wiped after 30 days, such that we cannot retrieve it. My friend and I have today speculated where the fraudulent caller may have gotten my friends contact details from? We thought probably by the dark web, possibly by a breach from one of the exchanges used to purchase his Bitcoin from. At the end of the day, be careful out there people. Never be forced to make a quick decision out of fear or FOMO to give up your personal details or seed phrase, etc, even if it’s to a supposed authority.
