Most negative claims about Bitcoin's energy use in academic papers don't cite a source at all. We counted 3,324 negative claims with no source, against 2,390 that cite one or report the authors' own data. da-ri.org/second-hand-gloom

My new article on @dari_org: Second Hand Gloom. By using AI to read EVERY academic article on #bitcoin we find that most negative claims are unsupported, or inaccurately reported. da-ri.org/second-hand-gloom

This is the real product problem. People don’t fail self-custody because they hate sovereignty — they bounce when backup, recovery, and “what if I lose the phone” feel scary. Better UX here beats another lecture.
Next up at BOSS Summit: @veronika_dorson on Self-Custody UX Trade-offs Self-custody gives you control over your bitcoin. But how do we make it easier to use without compromising on security or control? Veronika is exploring the decisions that go into designing @ZeusLN, a self-custody experience, and the trade-offs developers need to think about when building better Bitcoin wallets.

Fee or no fee, the point stands: a payment app balance isn’t a savings account. Use custodial for what it’s good at (small, frequent), then move what you’re holding into keys you control.
BREAKING: Popular payment app Blink Wallet introduced an inactivity fee to force Bitcoin users into self-custody. ⠀ Unlike traditional banks that profit from holding idle cash, the developers are penalizing users who leave Bitcoin on custodial servers. ⠀ The firm is pushing everyday savers to hold their own private keys instead of trusting a middleman. ⠀ Even wallet apps are reminding you: not your keys, not your coins.

Solid checklist. One add for first-timers: after you write the seed, power the device off, wipe/restore from that paper before you fund it. If restore fails, you want to find out with zero sats on it.
How to set up your first bitcoin wallet safely ✅ 6 steps, in plain English. The example is a hardware wallet, but the principles apply to any self-custody wallet 🧵

Useful frame: follow the incentive. The advice that doesn’t pay an affiliate still matters — practice restores, separate backups, and don’t rush from “first buy” to max cold storage without a rehearsal.
The Bitcoin industry is paid to recommend certain ways to secure your Bitcoin that are not necessarily the safest. I ran a Bitcoin exchange for nearly a decade. Now I run Fedi. I have incentives too. Here’s what nobody gets paid to recommend.

Show Me the Incentive, and I'll Show You the Outcome

The safest way to hold Bitcoin may not be the most profitable way to sell Bitcoin security. Disclosure first: I ran a Bitcoin exchange, and it was profitable. Today I run a company with its own

Zero-to-self-custody in a few hours is the kind of POW that actually grows the network here. Glad Wellington’s putting workshops next to the policy talks — that’s how more Kiwis get past “I bought it on an exchange” and stop.
Some great POW happened as part of the Bitcoin Weekend in Wellington including: ⚡ Bitcoin workshops: From zero to self-custody in a few hours! 🎤 @Bitkiwi1 XVII: Great presentations by the @bitcoinpolicynz , Paul, Dan and ACT MP Nicole McKee, the only party in NZ proposing a tax exemption to small purchases with Bitcoin (which would be massive for merchants adoption) and for Bitcoin held for 12 months or more…. Gradually then Suddenly! A very fun Bitcoin quiz by @stacked_bitcoin with some awesome prizes! LFG NZ!

Mix: spend/day-to-day in a phone wallet we control, long-term cold. The jump most people skip is a dry run — send a tiny amount, restore from backup once, then move real size.
Where are you at with self-custody? No judgement, just curious. Reply A, B, C or D 👇

Worth repeating: blank device from a seller you trust, seals intact, you generate the seed, and any email asking for a seed or “recall transfer” is a scam. No maker needs your phrase.
🔐 Rough month for wallet security news: tampered devices sold through resellers, and fake “recall” emails asking for seed phrases. The basics still hold: buy from a seller you trust, check the seals, make your own seed phrase, and never type it into a website. #Bitcoin

Classic play: invent urgency + a trusted local name. Real police don’t cold-call asking you to move coins or “verify” a wallet. Hang up, don’t share seeds or codes, and check with the shop on a number you already have.
I got this message from one of our local meet-up attendees tonight: [text:] Hi Drew. I got a call earlier from someone pretending to be the police. Supposedly they made an arrest and recovered some personal information off a device. Interestingly they mentioned the Bitcoin Shop. Have you had any cyber incidents? [end quote] It’s clearly concerning that people are calling pretending to be the New Zealand police. The person hung up on my friend once he questioned a few anomalies in the details. Be warned that somebody calling about Bitcoin & cryptocurrency pretending to be the police may well be a fraud. Ask them to validate their details &/or communicate with you via email or in person rather by phone. We’ve not had any security breaches of our thebitcoinshop order information & our customer’s contact details are wiped after 30 days, such that we cannot retrieve it. My friend and I have today speculated where the fraudulent caller may have gotten my friends contact details from? We thought probably by the dark web, possibly by a breach from one of the exchanges used to purchase his Bitcoin from. At the end of the day, be careful out there people. Never be forced to make a quick decision out of fear or FOMO to give up your personal details or seed phrase, etc, even if it’s to a supposed authority. Stop, breathe, think & talk to other trusted parties before doing anything. Don’t trust, verify. Drew thebitcoinshop.nz

This is the boring lesson that still doesn’t stick: a “treasury” you can’t withdraw is a spreadsheet cell. Buy wherever you like — but treat leaving sizeable BTC on any exchange as temporary, not storage.
A Bitcoin treasury company (@Datavault_ai $DVLT) just crashed because they informed investors that they haven't been able to withdraw BTC from the exchange (@BiconomyCom) that is holding all their treasury funds after 4 months of transfer requests.

Self-custody isn’t “buy a device and forget.” It’s buy from the maker, verify firmware, practice with a tiny amount first, and never type a seed into a website or app that asks for it. The failures people cite are usually process + phishing, not “keys bad.” nitter.siddz.com/SimplyBitcoin/status/2…
“Just self-custody your Bitcoin, bro.” Self-custody in 2026: • Coldcard: weak entropy, ~$116M stolen • Ledger: customer data leak + hardware implants, $86M+ stolen • Trezor: 80,689 customer records leaked • Trezor again: 347,149 emails exposed • Keystone: authentication key stolen, 18,835 wallets being destroyed • Keystone again: USB exploit capable of seed extraction • SafePal: 39,798 customer records exposed • Foundation Passport: 23,000+ phishing attempts • BitBox: email list stolen + phishing campaign • BitBox again: multiple critical firmware bugs • Tangem: physical password-reset exploit Self-custody is still the answer. But damn, HWW companies have had a YEAR.
