Scoop in @PunchbowlNews AM: 4 Senate Democrats led by @SenDuckworth are pushing back on the bipartisan permitting reform bill, arguing it will further enable Trump to favor fossil fuel projects and won’t stop its attacks on clean energy. Merkley, Markey, Wyden join new letter

Well which is it
Israeli elections are fun because: 1. Israel is the subject of intense global interest 2. Israeli politics is deeply polarized 3. Despite (2), the blocs don't really disagree about the thing that the world is interested in

The BTI takes money from a foundation funded by fossil-fuel magnate Charles Koch, one of the founders of climate disinformation.
Stay ahead of the curve: listen to @TheBTI before the conventional wisdom catches up in a decade or so.

Oh NOW he likes Tom Steyer 😂
The people who have been putting their money where their mouth is to combat climate change are supporting BAAJA because they recognize how transformational this would be for America's clean energy future. Thanks for your leadership @TomSteyer. Let's get this done.

Podesta “added that ‘there are other issues’ with the bill in his view, including ‘removing states’ ability to ensure clean drinking water’ and ‘a lot of restraint on the ability to get courts to enjoin for NEPA violations’.” That’s on top of this👇
SCOOP: Former Biden senior climate advisor John Podesta said senators should renegotiate the bipartisan permitting deal & he believes the bill’s permit certainty language hands Trump a “loaded Howitzer” to go after public lands. For @heatmap_news heatmap.news/politics/john-p…

New: Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, Dem co-author of permitting bill, expects to see more from Trump admin. “The administration needs to state clearly how it plans to get back to the regular permitting of wind and solar projects and demonstrate actual progress on doing so," he told me
SCOOP: The Trump administration is approving 3 more wind projects (2 in Illinois and 1 in Iowa) stalled by the Pentagon in a bid to win Dem support for the bipartisan permitting reform bill. It’s the 2nd tranche of ongoing approvals. Text subscribers got it first!

And if BAAJA passes, that “won’t be much wind/solar left in 2-3 years” will be the baseline the bill would require judges to use to determine “disparate treatment” of clean vs fossil energy.
They should also remember that there won't be much wind/solar left in 2-3 years for a "new" permitting bill to subsidize and/or permit.

This Columbia U Center for Global Energy Policy report on BAAJA identifies multiple unintended consequences in many of of the bill’s provisions and suggests revisions throughout. It also says “this is not a climate bill.” energypolicy.columbia.edu/pu…

Which is why it’s such a self-own that BAAJA constraints all future presidents from using new scientific data to direct agencies to constrain fossil energy projects, and establishes the baseline for differential treatment for energy projects using Trump’s last two years in office
Democrats need to remember that Donald Trump will not be president in two years, and given his popularity, a member of their own party very likely will be.

👀 Great questions from 4 Dem Senators on the permitting deal’s “inherent logical inconsistency”. "The promise of BAAJA will only succeed if President Trump takes care it is faithfully executed. The administration’s record gives us no basis to assume he will." H/t @climatebrad

I will note here that Jody Freeman, Professor of Law at Harvard, says that BAAJA is: "structurally designed to lock in and subsidize natural gas & other fossil projects over cleaner renewables for years to come, using the courts and taxpayer dollars." linkedin.com/posts/jody-free…

I will just recall that in 2015, @ColumbiaUEnergy said that ending the crude oil ban "could increase US crude production anywhere between 0 & 1.2 million barrels per day on average betwn now & 2025, & reduce domestic gasoline prices by between 0 & 12 cents per gallon." 1/3
🗞️New #BAAJA analysis via Columbia U analysts finds the #permitting bill is "likely to produce" a net GHG reduction compared to biz as usual, but extent is "highly uncertain." It's a qualitative assessment. #energy #climate (1/3)

Today, US crude production is closing in on 14 million barrels per day, and gasoline prices have risen roughly $2 per gallon. 2/n
