Few people whose work I enjoyed reading and teaching more than Sandy’s. What a loss.
My closest academic research partner, Susan Mayer, was one of Sandy's PhD students. I'm lucky to be an intergenerational beneficiary of some of his finest qualities: incisive writing, inextinguishable curiosity, and willingness to state contrarian views. nytimes.com/2025/02/12/books…

📢 #EdWorkingPapers: Shorter school weeks are sometimes pitched as a way to keep staff, but in Oregon, they led to higher teacher turnover, while non-teaching staff retention barely shifted. 🔍 Authors: @a_j_ainsworth, @EmilyKPenner, & @Yujia_Liu_20 📄 bit.ly/3Uba9Mi

People should read PARC v. Commonwealth of Education (1972) and Mills v. Board of Education (1972) to understand the stakes.
The people in my autism parenting groups who are just figuring out what gutting the Department of Education is going to do to their kids, after they voted for Trump. Whew, chile. It’s a whole lotta, “They can’t do that, right?” Nah, bro. They can and they’re gonna.

Just talked to some #UCI anteaters who’ve been bussed up from campus to my neighborhood polling location. One was in line since 2:30 PM!?! It should not be this hard for college students to vote.

Heads up, suburban and rural district leaders: Another study suggests that four-day school weeks might not be the right move if you want to retain teachers. In fact, it’s likely to backfire! Researchers @a_j_ainsworth @EmilyKPenner @Yujia_Liu_20 found that suburban and rural schools that adopted the shorter week saw higher rates of teacher turnover. They didn’t see the same effect for other school staff. Here’s the kicker: They found that the initial increase in teacher turnover after adopting a four-day school week was driven by new teachers (1-5 years of experience) AND more experienced teachers (15+ years of experience). Aside from losing more experienced teachers, that’s troubling for districts trying to diversify their teacher workforce, since teachers of color tend to be newer in their careers. Give the paper a read: edworkingpapers.com/sites/de… P.S. These findings are consistent with those of a different study we reviewed last year at @NCTQ (except this one only examined one district’s shift). More importantly, this second study found that student performance declined in math and reading after switching to a shorter week. nctq.org/blog/Think-a-four--…

we need an indoor clean air act
Air purifiers in Finnish daycare reduced children's illnesses by 18% in a carefully controlled study. This implies huge potential for better public health and cost savings from sick leaves, with a simple intervention against airborne infections. yle.fi/a/74-20089670

The least wonderful time of the year
105,000 acres have burned in Southern California this week from the #BridgeFire, #LineFire & #AirportFire. That's an area larger than the cities of #Anaheim, #SanBernardino, #ThousandOaks & #Burbank combined... @cbsnews via @californiawxguy

Nothing left to add to this great thread except to say that these two @UCIEducation rockstars are just the best. What a pleasure it is to do this important work with these two!
Four-day school weeks (4dsw) have exploded in popularity in recent years as a tool to recruit and retain staff, but how effective are they at doing so over the long term?  @EmilyKPenner, @Yujia_Liu_20 and I examine this question in Oregon. A 🧵 1/N  edworkingpapers.com/index.ph…
