A Walk Down Conker Lane. My latest children’s picture book is officially published! 🍂 🍁 It's a cosy, rhyming autumn story about a young boy called Freddie. He's sad summer is over but a walk with his father shows him autumn isn't so bad after all! I'm looking forward to reading this story to children in primary schools across the West Midlands as part of their autumn unit. If you would like to find out more about my author visits please get in touch. I’ve loved writing this story, inspired by autumn walks with my daughter & my favourite season. It feels very special to finally be able to say that it’s published. Available at Waterstones, TGJones, Foyles, Barnes & Noble, Amazon or wherever you buy your books! 📚 📖 🧡 #Solihull #Dorridge #Westmidlands #autumn #backtoschool

AI can never be responsible for a human; it has no duty of care; is not accountable for the consequences of any interactions, successes, failures or social and emotional responses. AI does not care about you. This is why human learning, teaching, schooling must and will always prevail.

How do you ensure learners engage with feedback? "Ensuring students engage with feedback is vital. A lack of feedback engagement can prevent learners from making progress and can potentially lead to repeated mistakes. If students don’t act on the feedback they receive, the time teachers spend reviewing work and providing thoughtful, relevant comments is wasted." Nice article here in today's FT which quotes me. Banning AI in assessments will actually lead to it being used more sensibly in the classroom. See here for more chess-related analogies from me. substack.nomoremarking.com/p…

The Independent Inquiry into White Working Class Educational Outcomes has published its final report. White British pupils on free school meals are half as likely to pass English and Maths GCSE as their peers. The report finds this gap can't be closed by schools alone, but names high-quality teaching as the biggest lever they can pull. Our Director of R&D, Prof. Rob Coe, served on the Panel. hubs.la/Q04mXtcS0

I was looking online at an AI company designed specifically for schools. One of the tools on its website helps respond to parental complaints. Really? Is this really something we want AI doing? We could end up in a strange Black Mirror feedback loop: a parent types their frustration into ChatGPT to produce a polished complaint, then the teacher copies & pastes that complaint into an AI tool to generate a swift response. A ping pong AI email chain clogging up the inbox. An email dialogue takes place, but no one is really talking. Where's the 'human in the loop' apart from the copy & paste job? Parental complaints can absorb precious teacher time. I understand why schools are looking for ways to make communication more manageable. There's no judgement on the schools, leaders or teachers. Parents might also lack the confidence & find AI helps them to articulate their worries. But where possible, concerns need a conversation, not an AI email exchange. A proper chat gives parents the chance to explain what they are worried about. It gives teachers the chance to listen, clarify, respond & problem solve together. Just because AI can do something doesn't mean it should. We need to tackle workload, protect teachers & leaders but I'm not convinced that's the best way.
