Cover crops have exploded the last week and the projected forecast is looking dry for much of the Midwest. If I had green cover growing and recently planted corn/soy or will plant soon I would terminate covers ASAP if worried about conserving soil moisture.
I visualized the responses from a recently conducted cover crop survey for farmers participating in the county cost-share program in Chippewa County, WI. Fun seeing the variety of approaches and motivation for #covercrop adoption happening locally!

Great article from @UNLNateDorsey, @UNLWeedSci@agtechluan on combine cleaning. Had the chance to spend a fun week teaching combine cleaning earlier summer with this team. Preventing Weed Seed Distribution from Combines from @UNL_Cropwatchcropwatch.unl.edu/2022/preve…
With #harvest22 around the corner, here's that friendly reminder that combines are THE MOST effective weed seed dispersal agents out there!
Start from weed free areas & clean the machine as often as possible.

Enjoying these realistic takes on soil health! This aligned well with what we experience in Wisconsin with trying to use no-till and cover crops to fine-tune systems to address common issues of compaction, drainage, and erosion. If managed incorrectly, productivity can be lost.
Fine-tuning WATER USE with soil health:
Climate determines the size of water-related effects.
Irrigation diminishes those effects.

SO BASICALLY YOU TAKE SOIL SAMPLES FROM YOUR FIELDS AND SEND THEM TO A LAB THAT TELLS YOU WHAT THE NUTRIENT CONCENTRATIONS ACTUALLY ARE TO MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS ON NUTRIENT AMOUNTS TO APPLY SO YOU AREN’T JUST GUESSING. THERES EVEN ASSISTANCE AND FREE EDUCATION ON HOW TO DO IT!
Great field day last night in Douglas County discussing nutrient management in pastures and optimizing pasture management. The friendly cows definitely stole the show!

Tar Spot of #corn continuing to increase in Wisconsin. We are adding 1-2 counties daily now. If you are in a Wisconsin County not in yellow yet, please DM me a picture of tar spot so I can verify. Get out and scout. Fungicide apps should have happened between VT and R3!
.@KolbyCoverCrops strikes again with another great paper (foundation of our #WiscWeeds cover crop research)!

Snagged some photos while in the field this morning. Good reminder to keep finding ways for more crop diversity and cover crops on the landscape so our waters don’t look like this ☹️
