Why does Northern Farm buy mares at auctions all over the world?
The answer is familiar to people in breeding, but it's worth explaining.
It's not unusual for a horse's father to have won a Group or Grade race, or to have already sired a winner at that level. A horse whose mother has won at that level, or has already produced a winner at that level, is far rarer.
Deep Impact might sire 200 foals in a year. Cesario could produce only one foal a year.
Northern Farm breeds hundreds of foals each year, which means it needs hundreds of good broodmares. The number of mares needed is far greater than the number of stallions.
That's why Northern Farm buys mares at sales across both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
The range of places they buy from is broad, and they've also made scouting trips to countries including Venezuela. Not everything they try works out, but I really enjoy seeing the results of their efforts to try new things year after year.
