i don't really see what "i lied to people's faces and they believed me" is supposed to prove...you can't actually have a society if you need to do a full-scale investigation of everything a stranger tells you before you do engage with them...

For those that don't know the history, the "nation" of Alberta was invented from whole cloth by PM Laurier (a Quebecois Liberal), specifically to divide western Canada further and prevent any western province from rivaling Ontario or Quebec

I'm in @WorksInProgMag's letters section this week, arguing that British YIMBYism's preoccupation with beauty is a massive waste of time and resources. Beauty is marginal. There are bigger problems to solve in British housing—they're just all a bit less sexy.

Read @ArthurDelaneyHP on how progressives are arguing permitting reform would inevitably benefit data center construction, hoping to make it a tough vote for Dems after a midterm campaign built in part around relentless attacks on data centers. huffpost.com/entry/permittin…

nithya raman's colleagues on the city council don't like her because she has correctly counseled them to not oppose housing developments that will win in court anyway
#LosAngelesMayor Politico: Nithya Raman is facing “a full-on, multiple-person verbal assault” from her City Council colleagues, not one of whom has endorsed her. If Raman wins, her ambitious agenda may depend on her ability to persuade a council majority to go along. politico.com/news/2026/10/20…

I have now released all 30 parts of the worlds first decentralized nba season preview. Making 30 pieces of short from video content is harder than most military deployments. Give my vids a watch and send em to someone who would dig them 🫡

what was the last ex ante uncertain election where the early voting data by the end clearly moved the odds?
It's interesting how little the early voting data seems to move the prediction markets. I've seen people on here say that the Texas voting has either been terrible or excellent for Talarico, yet the people with money on the line don't seem to ascribe any signal to it.

ok but what books
“Actually, in America, the reading of books is up. Sales of print books have increased nearly twenty-five per cent from a decade ago. The number of independent bookstores in the United States has climbed steeply since 2009, with a seventy-per-cent increase since 2020.” These nuggets & more in this delightful @NewYorker profile of James Daunt, founder of Daunt Books, CEO of Barnes & Noble, and Managing Director of Waterstones: newyorker.com/magazine/2026/…

that's because the book isn't really about islam, it's about france
The curious thing about Houellebecq’s Submission is how Islamophilic it actually is. Political Islam is presented as competent, sexually ordered and largely free of hypocrisy. (Wrong on all counts).

Even if they set their minds to it, Democrats couldn't beat inflation because today's inflation is structural: It's baked in to the effort to end neoliberal globalization --- something voters have been demanding for a decade. unherd.com/2026/10/why-democ…

the habits of highly effective divas
I call this the diva's paradox if you tell your manager you have complete conviction in an idea, and they tell you "no," and your response is anything OTHER than leaving the company to do it yourself, you are signaling to them that you don't actually have conviction in the idea. if you're not willing to bet your career on the idea, why should they? but then if you DO quit to pursue the idea yourself, your manager will get the message that they should take the idea seriously, but it's too late, you've already quit so you need a way to credibly signal that you have a burn-it-all-down level of conviction in your idea without actually quitting enter: the tantrum
