Two good things about Bryan Johnson: first, I sympathize deeply with the desire to slow aging. Second, whatever one thinks of his methods, he has undeniably brought public attention to our field.
That gives us an opportunity: we can explain the real scientific progress—and gently distinguish it from the noise. In nearly every interview I gave, I said that my greatest fear was that Bryan Johnson would die. Not because I wished him ill, obviously, but because some of the combinations and interventions seemed risky. I worried that if anything happened to him, people would conclude: “Well, if Bryan Johnson couldn’t make it, these aging researchers certainly can’t.”
I truly did not mean to become a prophet. But now, apparently, I have been promoted from geroscientist to Cassandra—with a much worse skincare routine.

How much work can AI do in 30 minutes? An astonishing amount.
I had it run a fake product launch for for me, and it conducted research, made strategy, created emails and social campaigns, built websites & graphics, and even did a video. All in 30 minutes. oneusefulthing.substack.com/…

Last night I used GPT-4 to write code for 5 micro services for a new product.
A (very good) dev quoted £5k and 2 weeks.
GPT-4 delivered the same in 3 hours, for $0.11
Genuinely mind boggling
I just watched @gdb use GPT-4 to:
- write code for a discord bot
- debug & read documenatation
- look at images and describe them in detail
- create website code (that works) for a site based from a pencil mockup made in a physical notebook
wtf
here is GPT-4, our most capable and aligned model yet. it is available today in our API (with a waitlist) and in ChatGPT+.

it is still flawed, still limited, and it still seems more impressive on first use than it does after you spend more time with it.
