December 9, 1981--In the early morning hours Mumia was sitting in his parked cab, filling out his log, when he heard gun shots. As he looked in his rear view mirror he saw people running and recognized his brother William Cook standing in the street staggering and dizzy. Mumia exited the cab, ran to his brother, when he saw a uniformed cop turn toward him gun in hand, saw a flash and went down to his knees. Mumia was shot in the chest and was critically wounded.
After being beaten by arriving backup cops on the street Mumia lay bleeding on the curb for 45 minutes before taken to the hospital where the cops beat him again.
At the scene, a Philadelphia police office, Daniel Faulkner, was also found shot.
Mumia has always maintained his innocence in the shooting of Faulkner, and that he did not shoot the officer.
