It was great to be able to present our work on migration policy, borderlands, urbanisation, climate change, livelihoods and conflict (and more!) at #GFMD14 Here @kalyango_sebba is sharing research from Uganda
We are so excited to have 2 of our key researchers, Fekadu Adugna Tufa and @kalyango_sebba with us this week, talking about their work on borderlands and urbanisation.
Check out our new website! Focused looks at our work on Conflict, Climate and Livelihoods (and their links to migration/displacement), and easier to navigate our publications! blogs.soas.ac.uk/ref-hornres…

For policymakers + practitioners, we recommend:
✅ Ensure that the conditions exist for voluntary, safe, dignified, informed return and sustainable re-integration.
✅ Support a pace of returns that returnees – and the communities they might return to – can both support.
🟢 Conflicts in the Horn of Africa often last many years and interventions must grapple with the complexity this creates.
🟢 Forced immobility is an often-overlooked implication of conflict.
🧵 The REF project has spent the last seven years exploring mobility, migration and displacement in the Horn of Africa.

For policymakers + practitioners, we recommend:
✅ An approach that views mobility as adaptation to a problem, instead of a problem itself
✅ Climate policy informed by social and physical sciences
✅ Policies that consider the lifestyle of pastoral and agro-pastoral communities
