#WelchGrantee@han_yimo at @RiceMSNE and collaborators have developed a method for a robust synthesis of Van der Waals solids. vdW solids are promising semiconductor materials that offer desirable properties such as ordered stacking, flexibility and minimal defects compared to conventional alternatives. However, due to their highly stable surface, uniform and controlled crystal growth of these materials remain challenging.
In this report published in Science Advances, researchers introduce an innovative method known as diffusion-steered epitaxial ALD (EPI-ALD) enabling the highly crystalline synthesis of Tellerium at 150°C. They also applied this method to a wide range materials such as tungsten diselenide, molybdenum disulfide and rhenium diselenide. This broad application is especially exciting for next-gen solid-state synthesis.
Congrats to Changhwan Kim and the rest of the team on this work! science.org/doi/10.1126/scia…

A promising boron aresenide (BA) superconductor material has set a record-high for optical phonon coherence. #WelchGrantee@realHanyuZhu and Zhifeng Ren's labs at @RiceMSNE and @UHPhysics, respectively, have shown a record-high, isotope purity-limited phonon coherence which means that BA has the potential to be a semiconductor with excellent heat dissipation up to 10x more than traditional materials. Dendritic thorns could be a culprit behind shortened Li-ion battery lifespan. #WelchGrantee@JunlouRice at @RiceMSNE was part of an international collaboration that used custom-built cryo–transmission electron microscopy to observe dendrites breaking in real time during battery operation. This has huge implications for more robust Li-ion battery design. Congratulations to 1st-author Qing Ai and the rest of the team! science.org/doi/10.1126/scie…
