#WelchGrantee @Hsu_Lab_UVa at @TexasScience and collaborators have discovered a covalent conjugate that hijacks cancer metabolism. Cancer's dependency on glycolysis, the Warburg effect, is an appealing target, but metabolic heterogeneity and resistance have made it hard to drug. This new study introduces a covalent activator of phosphofructokinase-1 liver type (PFKL) that couples glycolytic activation with delivery of a cytotoxic payload targeting carnitine palmitoyltransferase 2 (CPT2), shown in vitro and in vivo. Congratulations to 1st-author Xiaoding Jiang and the rest of the team! nature.com/articles/s41589-0…
Thrilled to share our new paper in Nature Chemical Biology led by Xiaoding Jiang. We developed XJ-4-85, a covalent PFKL activator that delivers a CPT2-targeting payload and suppresses tumor growth in vivo. Thanks to the Cambronne, Webb, and Kollman labs! doi.org/10.1038/s41589-026-0…

Rice University #WelchGrantee Guido Pagano and his team use a trapped-ion quantum simulator to study molecular electron transfer, the process by which electrons move from one molecule to another. Until now, their engineered environments came in two flavors: cooling to the ground state or continuous heating. In a new study in Physical Review Letters, the team added two independent controls: Random electric-field "kicks" that add vibrational energy and tune the heating rate of a cooling laser that damps those vibrations. The researchers could hold ions at a chosen temperature and control how quickly they move between temperatures. At higher temperatures, electron transfer efficiency changed, and processes that are absent at the ground state switched on. Congrats to first author Visal So and the rest of the team on this work 👏journals.aps.org/prl/abstrac…

🧬 Hidden translation, now visible in tiny samples. Over the past decade, ribosome profiling and proteomics have uncovered a surprising number of "translons": translated regions outside annotated genes. Some regulate gene expression, and others encode functional micropeptides. But finding them has usually required large amounts of material, which limits studies to cell lines or big organs. Our #WelchGrantee @CenikLab at @UTChemistry has just disclosed in Nature Communications, a method which enables detection of translons in samples with limited quantity of material. Using Ribo-ITP, the researchers profiled microdissected hippocampal tissue and even single preimplantation embryos, identifying thousands of translons. Congratulations to 1st-auuthor Vighnesh Ghatpande and the rest of the group on this work! news.rice.edu/news/2026/new-…

A new class of magnetism called 'altermagnetism' has been recently proposed in the field of magnetics. These materials have the potential for miniaturizing and improving RAM in computers. @smalleycurl #WelchGrantee @mingyiRICE and collaborators showed ruthenium dioxide as a new quantum material that potentially displays altermagnetisim in its ultrathin form, but interestingly, not in its bulk form. Researchers hypothesize that due to epitaxial strain in thin-layers of just a few-atoms thick can induce altermagnetism. “The strain-dependent nature suggests that we may be able to use lattice strain as a tuning knob to induce or control altermagnetism,” Yichen Zhang, 1st-author on the paper, said. “This could be extremely useful when thinking about next-generation spintronics and RAM architectures.” Congratulations again to the team! news.rice.edu/news/2026/shed… @mingyiRICE

#WelchGrantee @han_yimo at @RiceMSNE and collaborators have developed a method for a robust synthesis of Van der Waals solids. vdW solids are promising semiconductor materials that offer desirable properties such as ordered stacking, flexibility and minimal defects compared to conventional alternatives. However, due to their highly stable surface, uniform and controlled crystal growth of these materials remain challenging. In this report published in Science Advances, researchers introduce an innovative method known as diffusion-steered epitaxial ALD (EPI-ALD) enabling the highly crystalline synthesis of Tellerium at 150°C. They also applied this method to a wide range materials such as tungsten diselenide, molybdenum disulfide and rhenium diselenide. This broad application is especially exciting for next-gen solid-state synthesis. Congrats to Changhwan Kim and the rest of the team on this work! science.org/doi/10.1126/scia…

Thiophosphates are a valuable moiety found in a variety of drug molecules and are known for their superior biostability compared to the native phosphate counterpart, which is prone to dephosphorylation. A limiting factor of thiophosphate incorporation in drug design is its prohibitive cost to synthesize using expensive ATPγS. That's when #WelchGrantee Han Renata's @hanzyduzit lab designed an ATPγS recycling strategy, which greatly reduces cost and allows exploration of thiophosphate installation in promising therapeutic candidates. Congratulations to Xiangyu Wu and Yu Fu on this work! nature.com/articles/s41586-0…

A modular synthesis of hindered α-tertiary aliphatic amines has been developed by #WelchGrantee @QinLab at @UTSWMedCenter. This 3-component reaction turns readily available, bench-stable precursors and a dual-functional catechol, into medicinally-relevant molecules. The high-functional-group compatability and ease of access to diverse, synthetically-demanding molecular architectures renders this method highly useful for a synthetic chemists toolbox. Congratulations to authors Chen-Yan Cai and Yuzuru Kanda on this work! onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

Congratulations to our #WelchGrantee @AjoFranklinLab on winning a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Genesis Mission Award, a national initiative harnessing artificial intelligence and advanced computing for accelerating scientific discovery. The Ajo-Franklin lab will develop an AI-driven platform for the biosynthesis of isoprenoids. Isoprenoids are promising alternatives to petroleum-derived solvents, liquid fuels and rubber, yet their synthesis at industrial scale remains limited. Researchers will use AI-guided predictions to facilitate high-throughput screening of microbes that will produce isoprenoids at industrial scale. news.rice.edu/news/2026/rice…

How can AI help scientists find better treatments faster? #WelchGrantee James Sacchettini and his team at @TAMUBCBP are using AI to identify misleading drug candidates early in screening and make years of collaborative research data easier to search and use. Their CAGE-Fusion model flags “nuisance” compounds, helping researchers focus on the most promising leads. The model ranks nuisance molecules as more suspicious than hit compounds about 94% of the time. By combining AI with open-source data infrastructure, the team is helping accelerate the path from chemical screening to potential new treatments for drug development.
