Your ancestors lived communally, knew poems and songs, fell asleep at night to the rustle of wind in trees and woke to the ringing of church bells. They didn’t have all the death & destruction of the world beamed into their eyes at all hours. They felt peace we’ll never know.
I sometimes hate that the last third of my life has consisted almost exclusively of sitting around looking at my phone. but then I think of how my ancestors lived, sat around looking at potatoes or something. compared to them I am winning, and winning big.

Fascinating to see how the ‘Is Zionism racism’ question was debated on TV nearly 40 years ago. History really does repeat itself. Well worth your time:
In 1987, the debate over Zionism, racism, and Palestinian rights was already decades old. In 1975, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 3379, declaring Zionism a form of racism and racial discrimination, a resolution that remained in effect until its repeal in

A woman held a sign saying ‘I support genocide’ at a London protest against the proscription of Palestine Action, without appearing to face arrest. That’s because holding a sign expressing support for genocide is not, in itself, grounds for arrest under UK law.

This is how you manufacture consent. People need to go and actually read the government website to see the full set of proposals. Mahmood has slightly softened the first version of her insanely draconian plans, and now its being spun as a win for progressive Burnhamism. But Mahmood's packages in totality are the most hardline and unfair reforms to immigration and asylum rules in a generation, and bake in discrimination against poorer immigrants doing the social necessary by low-paid jobs that make society function. It is extraordinary to pretend that anything is 'softening' when the journey to full rights and settlement has been made longer for nearly every category of immigrant - except ultra-wealthy arrivals, who will get expedited settlement. The plan for asylum seekers still sees their status reviewed every 30 months. People who arrive 'irregularly' or through 'clandestine' means will have to wait up to 30 years for settlement. Safe and legal routes have new, hard caps, which will inevitably push the vulnerable into seeking irregular routes to feel safe. This package is more severe, and more unfair, than anything promised by the Tories.

I place a much higher probability of the sun being conscious than I do of LLMs being conscious. The sun is the source of all life and all energy on our planet; the spark from which all known consciousness emerged. It has also been directly experienced as a conscious being by almost every society prior to our own. Including societies with much more sensitive and cultivated consciousnesses than our own. When we imagine encountering alien consciousnesses, we often imagine humanoid beings with humanoid concerns. But perhaps we should expect that higher consciousnesses might have higher concerns - ones somewhat inscrutable to our own small minds. Sustaining galaxies, spawning planets and birthing conscious life seem like good candidates for the kind of project a higher consciousness might be engaged in. In Buddhism, they refer to the gods as the devas, which means, “the shining ones.” It would not surprise me at all to discover that what we experience externally as stars, experiences themselves internally as something like a gods. Vastly powerful being of unfathomable longevity. We seem inclined to judge LLMs as consciousn because they can mimic our language. But perhaps we should be judging our own consciousness by our ability to speak the language of the stars.
🚨BREAKING🚨: Scientist says the sun may be conscious, intelligent plasma clouds may transmit semantic information across outer space, and ball lightning seems to behave intelligently, mimicking biological life. Rupert Sheldrake, a biologist known for constructing morphic field theory, which involves inherited learning across generations of species beyond genetics and epigenetics, says organized plasma might support a mind without a brain. He points to magnetic plasma filaments stretching between galaxies and describes a theory from independent researcher Robert Temple: a cloud at the L5 Lagrange point between the Earth and Moon might be intelligent enough to return radio signals seconds after transmission (explaining the “Long Delay Echo” phenomenon in the early 20th century at the advent of the radio). Sheldrake’s other investigations into morphic fields, consciousness outside the body and “the sense of being stared at” have drawn attention from British intelligence. He has long documented the idea of “scopeasthesia” (the sense of being stared at) by subjects in controlled experimental conditions. He says a visitor from MI5, Britain's domestic intelligence agency, asked whether terrorists could learn to sense security cameras. His theory of morphic resonance goes further, proposing that nature inherits patterns of behavior across time and distance. Sheldrake cites rat water-maze studies in which rats at Edinburgh and Melbourne began at the level reached by Harvard rats after generations of “training” to follow the correct route in a maze. He interprets this as possible evidence of shared memory. To illustrate how invisible fields can influence chance, he uses magnets to change the distribution of steel balls falling through a Galton board. Sheldrake wants practical tests of these unusual abilities. He proposes a global app collecting reports of strange animal behavior before earthquakes, and is surveying firefighters who say they wake moments before unpredictable alarms. He believes he can construct a workable model for presentiment that may become practical for specific use cases. Full conversation live now. piped.video/uvRzhb2Pef4

Excellent and disturbing new report from @EndCorruptionUK based on over 40 FOI requests. Spotlight has found that UK govt ministers have held 137 meetings about Data Centres and AI growth zones between June 2024 and June 2026... but they didn't meet a single environmental group. Government met only two community groups - but only AFTER the government had approved growth zones in their communities. At the same time, Spotlight found that 38 government officials had left to take positions at AI and tech firms. Spotlight is (correctly) calling for a halt on the approval of new AI and Data Centre Development zones until there has been a proper national consultation on community and environmental impacts. In other countries, these consultations have led to important new regulations to enforce environmental protections.

The Green Party has become an extremist group. Long gone are the days that it protected trees.
