My Black principal told us our new colleague had been hired because he was Black.
Within weeks, students were reporting that he called them “motherf**kers.” He sent as many as ten students into the hallway at a time. The rest of us picked up the pieces.
She kept praising him.
That was the summer of 2016. I was six years into teaching, watching a district that couldn’t educate its students become increasingly convinced that the problem was that most of its teachers were white.
