The US mid-term elections swept the Democratic party to power in both chambers of the US Congress, raising hopes that lawmakers will now push back against disruptions to science introduced by the Trump administration. go.nature.com/4iw9Sib

Thinking of this as a celebration of the historic rebuke of a regime by & for nauseating excrescences - may reason & beauty prevail

MAKE TWITTER SCIENCE AGAIN. Less outrage. More experiments. Less conspiracy. More curiosity. Less shouting. More discovery. Less bullshit. More evidence.

Probably okay much of the time, provided that the Bonferroni correction is used where necessary. Such as here 👇 xkcd.com/882/

It's Election Day. Government scientists are a vital check on power - they speak the truth and hold decision makers accountable. Many of us don't think about how science and democracy intersect. Dr. Gretchen Goldman of @UCSUSA shares why.

Trump is dismantling the science system that made America a superpower. NIH has delayed or canceled over 2,000 grants on Alzheimer’s, cancer and more, NSF is withholding more than $1 billion, Energy lost over 1,000 scientists, and Pentagon labs lost 14% of their staff, which the Pentagon itself says could have grave consequences for defense. China is catching up while foreign Ph.D. applications drop 21%. We built this over 80 years, and it’s being gutted in under two. nytimes.com/2026/10/31/clima… #MedSky #LawSky #press #Science #NIH #NSF #Research #DOGE #China

I am an immigrant, a scientist, a former White House official - and an American. It is infuriating to spend years working to improve people’s lives only to watch elected leaders undermine the science, institutions, and rights that make that work possible. To watch them push conspiracy theories and actively work against people who have dedicated their careers to helping others. We should expect more from the people we put in power. Competence, decency, respect. For people and for evidence. Voting is how we can change course. Please vote in the midterms.

The very words "gold standard" and "golden age" have become contaminated and unclean

You cannot fire scientists, halt ongoing research and clinical trials, drive away the next generation and then declare a “golden age” of American science. These cannot fundamentally coexist. As we head into the elections here is a breakdown breakdown of the damage done to the U.S. scientific ecosystem so far: Defense research labs lost roughly 14% of their staff. The Pentagon itself warned of “potentially grave consequences for the future of national defense.” NIH staffing fell by 1/5. More than 2,000 biomedical research grants were delayed or canceled, affecting work on cancer, Alzheimer’s and other major diseases affecting the health of American public. HHS announced a wind-down of mRNA vaccine development at BARDA, affecting 22 projects worth nearly $500 million through cancellations, cuts and restructuring and halting new mRNA projects under the program. The National Science Foundation lost roughly 1/3 of its staff and withheld more than $1 billion in funding. The Energy Department lost more than 1,000 scientists and technical staff. Grant awards from its two major science offices fell by more than $500 million during the administration’s first year. NASA lost 20% of its employees with Ph.Ds. Foreign Ph.D. applications at leading universities fell 21%. Schools reduced admissions as funding uncertainty made it harder to support future scientists and removing a pathway for sustaining scientific excellence globally. Meanwhile, a proposed rule would give political appointees greater control over who receives research funding, screening applications for supposedly “anti-American values.” Thankfully Congress rejected the massive proposed budget cuts and courts forced funding restorations. But neither can replace the time and investment already made. We can’t just simply flip the switch back on. And while the federal government can still spend roughly $200 billion on research - we continue to witness the dismantling of the capacity to turn funding into discovery. And make no mistake - other countries are happy to step in - including China - who are recruiting the talent we are losing. The treatments we will need in 20 years depend on the research we conduct today. So do our security, our prosperity and our ability to maintain our lead globally. Vote tomorrow because science depends on it.

Will an all-out race to the moon would be won by a country that heavily supports & encourages science & engineering - or by a country that heavily defunds & disrespects science & engineering? Such a difficult question 🧐

Science is under siege. @nytimes has launched a major project examining how Trump is dismantling the research enterprise. It's not just medical research. There are “potentially grave consequences for the future of national defense.” First installment: nytimes.com/2026/10/31/scien…

Debate on Montana's Right-to-Try is a good thing. We need to confront why Montana and other reform efforts emerged. The existing FDA regulatory system has become prohibitively slow and expensive, increasingly favoring large pharmaceutical companies while leaving patients and smaller innovators with limited options. Meanwhile, inadequate enforcement of existing regulations has allowed an enormous black market for unapproved peptides and other experimental products to flourish. The status quo is not a defensible alternative simply because proposed reforms carry risks of their own. Patients deserve better than what the FDA is currently delivering. linkedin.com/posts/mkaeberle…
