'Schools for the rich. Skills for the poor'. 'Knowledge is Freedom'. Highly recommend this.
Ok I hope this will be the most useful conversation you hear about Education this year. This week’s episode of The Amol Rajan Connection (ARC) with @daisychristo of No More Marking has really struck a chord. Anyone with kids; or who works in schools, colleges and universities; or who is interested in the very nature of learning and how the mind works; or what technology is doing to us, will enjoy this. That’s not my view alone; it’s the revealed view of the comments flooding in. We discuss: + working memory vs long-term memory + the risk of creating a Stupidogenic Society + why Knowledge is Freedom + schools for the rich and skills for the poor + how to optimise vocational education + the implications of AI for education + what children should learn + technology and the classroom + Labour’s education policy Something for your weekend perhaps. We’d be honoured if you’d others listening to this episode. Thanks so much for your time - and to Daisy, for a very special contribution to the ARC Universe. Available on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Amazon Music. piped.video/Xcyc3LQkqjY?is=VRY_…

Really rather good and quietly rips out the oppositional nature of the debate to present keenly the "sides" to the talk around oracy. Particularly good in analysing the powerful knowledge / powerful speech arguments & the camps to dismantle the standard speech of the powerful

The weightlifting analogy @daisychristo uses to illustrate why effort is essential to learning is beautifully put and well worth sharing with students. Full podcast here amolrajanconnection.com/podc…

The very worst arguments in education are those which say "you have a different opinion than I do about how children learn, therefore you must be a bad person. Children are precious and I need to save them from your harmful agenda."

Two years ago I led my schools oracy strategy. We did very little across the whole school because there were other things that would have a greater impact on students futures than introducing a lot of different frameworks etc.. Instead we looked at two specific strategies.

The most wonderful thing that has occurred due to Patrick Stewart’s passing are the truly heartwarming, beautiful and laugh out loud stories that have come out about him, not just from stars but from day to day people who chanced upon him. This is one of my favourites.

I love it when people from the education world break into the wider public consciousness. And delighted that we’ve sent education’s mightiest avenger for this task.
In this week’s episode of The Amol Rajan Connection: @daisychristo on how we’re messing up Education; the danger of the Stupidogenic Society; what technology does to our minds; long-term vs working memory; and how AI affects what children should learn. Out now on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Amazon Music.

Probably my favourite version. It's much less bombastic than Olivier's or Branagh's. #StCrispinsDay

Just started Alice Cooper's autobiography. Already I can tell its going to be excellent. This is NOT going to be the usual "wild men live crazy" rock & roll read.

There's been a lot of talk in the last few weeks in edu circles about whether the trad education movement has failed, what it needs to do next, etc. This article is just the latest in a succession of examples that shows how us edu-trads have not been nearly as successful as we hoped in altering elite consensus on education. We have obviously seen with all the Labour party policies that we completely failed to convince Labour. But actually, it's not like we've really convinced the Conservatives either. This is Dan Hannan, major figure in Brexit, major figure in Conservative politics, presumably has some idea of who Michael Gove is - and here he is in the Telegraph confidently asserting that we no longer need to know things because we can look things up. (The ironies in this piece abound, by the way. He argues for lessons in spotting bad bogus arguments at the same time as building an article around the argument that memory doesn't matter any more. He argues that "identifying improbable claims" is a generic skill that can be taught in the abstract, at the same time as claiming that handwriting and geography are obsolete. He says that you can always just look up what you need, whilst signally failing to look up any of the evidence on the role of long-term memory...I could go on.) I wrote a few weeks ago that there was some evidence journalists at the Financial Times were waking up to all the evidence on cognitive science, its implications for schools, the international test evidence. But the elite understanding of this is a very thin layer, absolutely skin deep. The mass of second-hand dealers in ideas are still distilling their frenzy from Romantic pedagogy. Depressing. I honestly don't know what else we can do. We wrote the books. We had the debates. We built the schools. We aced the tests. And then it turned out nobody cared. Right now it is definitely a bleak time to be a trad. It feels like we are on Athelney Marshes, beset by vandals without and dissension within. BUT we have to keep the faith. Reality is an undefeated champion. Despair is a sin! What we do works! It may well be that for now, the New World with all its power & might etc., is going to have to step in to save our bacon for a bit. Maybe the momentum is shifting to @ehanford and Sold a Story, @rastokke and Chalk & Talk, @jettybe3 , etc. We have got to dig in. As Declan Rice said, it's not done!

The Pittsburgh Steelers asked an Englishman to sing the American national anthem. Bruce Dickinson did it a cappella, no autocue, having never sung it before in his life. He held "free" for six seconds.
