LAWYERS PAID FIRST
Government figures show £17.6m in legal costs on the Overturned Convictions scheme. That is equal to 26% of the redress paid.
These postmasters had already been cleared by the courts.
Why does it cost so much to pay people we already know were wronged?
The gov managed to spend £17.6m on legal fees just to pay compo to 111 postmasters whose convictions had already been overturned by the courts.
That is £158,500 per person in legal costs, or £26 to the lawyers running the scheme for every £100 that reached the victims.
