MCSI's Attainable Housing Toolkit is for you: For local leaders, Americaās #housing challenge isnāt an abstract national statistic. It is a #teacher commuting an hour to work, a #policeofficer unable to buy a home in the community he protects, a young #family delaying
homeownership, and an employer struggling to recruit workers. strongcommunitysolutions.orgā¦

The challenges facing #attainablehousing are very real. We'll be unveiling something this week that gets at these very issues and helps communities address these challenges.
We live in the most regulated housing industry in history.
Small residential projects in Austin face 1000s of rules that didnāt even exist 10 years ago.
Example:
-light dimmers required
-Wildfire screens / yards
-Electric chargers required
-Yard Sprinkler inspections
-Tree zone mulch / fencing
- Entrance stabilization
The list goes on.
Each rule independently makes some sense. But the combination of all of these rules is suffocatingly expense.
Achieving housing affordability will require a great balancing of regulations. True life safety regs must remain, but the sunsetting of the rest needs to happen.
This might sound scary.
But remember that older neighborhoods that exist today, were built at a time when those regulations didnāt exist.
And they are not only fine, they are actually desirable.

Latest #WatsonWire: Austin and Travis County has been preparing for a potential wildfire event for years. We know that extreme weather events are increasing.
We understand that the most effective way we can protect our community from wildfires is through education, prevention, and preparation.
Thatās where youāthe publicācomes in. If people prepare and take precautions now, they can protect themselves, their families, neighbors, and community.
Next Wednesday, August 5, Iām co-hosting a Wildfire Symposium at City Hall.

Yesterday, we talked about how we took 1 millon pounds of trash out of our waterways and brought it to the landfill. Similtaneously, @hungerathomesv has been working to keep 1 million pounds of food out of our landfills and deliver it to families in need across our community. San JosƩ takes service seriously.
