From Addiction to a University Degree: Ginny Burton’s Recovery Story
Ginny Burton struggled with drug addiction for years before beginning her recovery in 2012. Nine years later, she graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in political science, reaching a milestone that once seemed out of reach.
Ahead of graduation, Burton shared a photo of herself at the ceremony alongside a mugshot from 2005. She wrote about being introduced to drugs at age 7, developing a crack addiction by 14, and dropping out of school in ninth grade, despite once hoping to become an attorney.
Her path included incarceration, relapse, and the deaths of her grandmother and mother. After another arrest in 2012, she spent six months in jail. She went through withdrawal there and began to reconsider the direction of her life.
Over the following years, Burton made hiking and cycling part of her recovery. She later moved to San Diego with her teenage daughter for a fresh start and began sharing her story online to encourage others facing addiction.
Her message also reached Brad McLeod, a former addict who runs a sober living blog and Instagram page. He encourages people in recovery to seek support and give themselves time. Burton continues to stay connected to her recovery community and reminds others that their past does not decide what they can do next.
