The ministerial teams are now in place at DESNZ, DEFRA and MHCLG — and there is good news for local climate leadership. A welcome thread from UK100: 120-plus local authorities, led by all parties, representing over 60% of the UK population 🧵

MHCLG has a team packed with local government experience. @JimfromOldham led Oldham. Baroness @_judithblake led Leeds. @LabourSatvir led Southampton. Baroness @SharonStevenage led Stevenage. Four former council leaders in the department that holds the keys to local government.

Welcome to the whole MHCLG team and all new ministers. For them and the new gov, our asks are unchanged: fiscal devolution reaching every council, not just those with mayors, and a statutory climate duty. We're ready to help the former Mayor of Greater Manchester’s gov deliver.

Welcome to No 10, @andyburnham. As Mayor of Greater Manchester, the new prime minister led a UK100 member authority, backed our pledge and called for local leaders to have the tools to do the job — including backing, in principle, a statutory climate duty. 🧵

A warm welcome to @Miatsf as Energy Secretary. From energy consumers and warm homes at DESNZ to devo at MHCLG—and a shared New Statesman panel with our chief exec—we've seen Miatta's deep understanding of local climate leadership up close. Can't wait to continue working together.

And welcome back @AngelaRayner as Housing Secretary. MHCLG holds the keys to local gov [but not now devo—more detail to come]. Our asks are unchanged: fiscal devolution reaching every council and a statutory climate duty. Local leaders, from all parties, are ready to deliver.

53% of Britons don't know what to believe on climate change — yet two-thirds still back the UK's climate targets. Councils are caught in the middle. Our co-president Cllr Tracey Dixon, @STyne_Council, writes in the @lgcplus today on why local leaders need better comms tools 🧵
