The Collapse of the Case Against Lucy Letby 🧵
As I understand it, here is where things stand as the evidence unravels:
1. Psychology: Prof. Gísli Guðjónsson confirmed Post-it notes reflect acute distress, not guilt.
2.Medical Evidence: Air embolism/NG-tube theories debunked by relevant experts; insulin tests lacked mass spectrometry, with no evidence Letby logistically administered exogenous insulin.
3.Investigation: Senior police leaders are challenging the safety of the investigation for failing to follow national police protocols to appoint an independent multidisciplinary panel, relying primarily on Dr. Dewi Evans instead, and letting hospital consultants pick cases over auditing all deaths.
4.Statistics: Multiple statisticians proved shift roster cherry-picked data by removing off-duty events.
5.Circumstantial Evidence: Handover sheets, social media searches, and presence on shift are proof of nothing without solid medical/scientific grounding.
So, will the CCRC refer the case?
Given all of the above, how could a CCRC referral not be highly likely? The legal standard is only whether there's a "real possibility" the convictions are unsafe, making a referral feel hopefully inevitable.
The Legal Hurdles Ahead:
As a layperson looking at the legal setup, if I've understood it correctly, what stands out is the "every count" hurdle: to overturn her whole-life sentence, the Court must find the verdicts unsafe across all 15 counts. If judges uphold even one, the whole-life order legally remains, though, from what I can tell, I struggle to see even one count where the evidence hasn't been completely picked apart.
