Last year I decided I was no longer satisfied just posting about housing. So I started a company with 3 other incredible dudes with the mission to build missing-middle housing at scale. Introducing... The American Housing Corporation It’s time to rebuild the American Dream.
For a half-century, America has critically under-built family-sized housing in our most dynamic cities and neighborhoods, rendering them childless and unaffordable. It's time to save the American Dream. Introducing The American Housing Corporation.

“We need 1 billion Americans minimum, probably more like 2 or 3 billion, with better demographics and better natural resources.” Very very very based Palmer Lucky.
Palmer Luckey warns America cannot compete with China’s population advantage forever through innovation alone: “We need 1 BILLION Americans minimum. Probably more like 2 or 3 billion.” 🇺🇸🇨🇳 “Yes, we need to get our act together. We need to do better at manufacturing, at defense, all these things. But everything is just biting around the margins if we’re 350 million people and they’re 2 billion people who are roughly the same. How exceptional do we have to be to achieve a 10-to-1 ratio forever, in perpetuity? It’s not practical. It’s not logical. I would say it’s even possibly a racist thing to believe that we can be so much better than China and the Chinese people that we’ll just beat them with a tiny fraction of the population. We need to do better with what we’ve got. But we also just need a lot more people. We need 1 billion Americans minimum, probably more like 2 or 3 billion, with better demographics and better natural resources. The Dutch once had the most powerful navy in the world. They didn’t lose that position because they fell behind on factories or shipbuilding. They became economically irrelevant.” Both countries are competing with respect to declining birth rates. Both nations must be more willing to have children and expand the population growth exponentially over the next decade. The current economic path is unsustainable if our labor force begins to shrink even with artificial intelligence on the rise.

Wait, what if Fukuyama actually doesn’t understand history at all and as a matter of convenience, he just decided to declare it ended?

People are hating on this by calling it the Hudson Yards of SF. What they’re missing is that, while Hudson Yards is full of 1000s of the cringiest transplants imaginable, without the Hudson Yards containment zone, these folks would be all over NYC! We need more Hudson Yards!
One of San Francisco's largest redevelopment projects could completely transform nearly 19 acres of land near Downtown. Plans are moving forward for the redevelopment of the Caltrain Railyards at 4th and King in SoMa. The project could include: • Up to 5,834 apartments • Up to 5.6 million SF of commercial space • 160,000+ SF of retail • A completely rebuilt Caltrain station • More than 4 acres of public open space • Multiple skyscrapers reaching 350 to 600 feet • A potential 850-foot tower This land is currently occupied by railroad tracks, platforms, maintenance facilities and the existing Caltrain station. The proposal would modernize the transit infrastructure, relocate train storage and maintenance, and create an entirely new mixed-use neighborhood above and around the station. Thousands of people could be living, working, shopping and spending time in what is currently a massive rail yard. And all directly connected to one of the Bay Area's most important transit corridors. The project is now entering environmental review, with construction potentially starting in 2029 and taking 15 to 20 years to complete.... There's obviously a long road ahead, but I love seeing developers think this big about underutilized urban land. This could completely reshape SF. 📍San Francisco

Say what you will about Robotaxis and Waymos, but they’re the only cars that drive at any kind of reasonable speed in my neighborhood.

China’s operating on a whole other level. We just can’t compete with this kind of juice in the US.
Just came out of an LED panel factory in Guangzhou. Most notable thing after having toured European manufacturers for over a month last year: Nobody minded us taking pictures. In western factories that's taboo, because nobody wants any information about how they produce circulating. I asked the production manager why they don't care here. His answer: "You can see how we do it, but each of these machines costs ¥3m (~€400k) and we run dozens of them." The moat is capital. There's also a default assumption that everything gets copied anyway, so nobody builds their business on production secrets. Another big reason is that showing the line is marketing. About 95% of companies selling LED panels here are trading companies. Middlemen = somebody's taking a cut = you're paying a bad price. Letting you see the factory proves they actually produce, shows the quality of the components, and signals you're getting a fair price. Same with privacy. In Europe, filming workers beyond their hands is a no-go. Here people glanced up at three people filming them and continued working. Try that in a Bavarian SME. Some numbers: > 95% automated: that means machines assemble 95% of components, humans 5% > Factory runs 24/7 on two 12-hour shifts. In Europe this would be 3x 8h > 60h weeks, two days off, just not always the weekend > Guangdong minimum wage is ¥2,680 (€360) per month, so ~€1.40/hour > Employer cost is ¥4,100 though and employee pays ¥700 in taxes. Those are all pension and social contributions. There's no income tax on salaries below ¥5,000 The owner is called Cha-Ming, so he goes by Charming for foreigners. He definitely enjoys leaning into this name for branding.

Michelle was one of the first people to take a bet on us at @americanhousing. She understands the importance of the housing crisis, what it’s going to take to solve it, and the prize that awaits those who do.
Our mandate at Pax is quite simple: we back founders building a future where technology strengthens America at its foundations and drives prosperity for everyone. It’s hard to think of a more vital (and broken) pillar of society than housing. This country was built, in part, on the promise that you could own a piece of it. Housing underpins everything from family formation to middle-class wealth creation. A mortgage is the largest, cheapest loan most Americans will ever get, and they’re being locked out of it. Startups have spent years trying to tackle housing and every one has failed. Not necessarily because of bad ideas, but because of structural roadblocks like permitting, fragmented markets, mismatched capital, etc. Some of those barriers are finally coming down, and a new wave of startups like @americanhousing, @buildwithcuby, @ReframeSystems, @Permitflow and other are building around the category’s failure modes. I wrote up some thoughts on whether this might be the moment homebuilding startups finally work. 🏡 Link in comments.

"Declined Services" When are we, as a modern and civilized society, going to decide that letting these people rot in the street is horrifically inhumane and that involuntary commitment and/or rehab is the most ethical path forward. These people need us and we've failed them.

"Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." These people need healing, not clean needles and narcan. They need doctors, therapists, and psychologists. They need people who give a fuck.

We spend way too much time in our apartments and it's making everyone anxious and depressed. Bring back the office, bring back the office romances, bring back the annoying coworkers, bring back the post-work happy hours. You're not depressed. You're just under-socialized!
My strongest “vibes not evidence” belief is that remote work is a cancer that’s making (most) people miserable even though it seems better in the short term.

MTA should close this station until the people who did it confess or until someone rats them out. I'd give it 2 weeks tops until someone gives them up. Pay your fare, losers.
Anonymous submission: Last week, a group of activists disabled the OMNY readers at the BQ Church Avenue station in Brooklyn with an automatic center punch and drill. They opened the gate so people can ride for free, and painted the cameras to protect themselves and fellow riders from surveillance. This was deliberate act of protest against unaffordable transit, hyper-surveillance in predominantly Black and brown neighborhoods, and the MTA's collaboration with the military industrial complex. YOU ARE BEING WATCHED. OMNY records when and where you travel, your photograph, name, DOB, billing address, and other personal details. This invasive tech creates a profile to track your life and travel patterns. OMNY’s privacy policy places no limits on the data it collects about you. EVERY TAP FUNDS A WAR PROFITEER. OMNY is operated by Cubic, a military equipment company making combat simulators. They sell the F-35 fighter jet training system to imperialist zionist entities like israel. The F-35 is a key weapon in israel's genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, and all of the US's imperialist wars, responsible for massacring millions of people. FIGHT BACK. The MTA and Cubic don't deserve your hard earned cash. Take action, smash a reader, jump the turnstile, hold the gate for others. If you must pay, use cash for OMNY cards, and tap yourself and fellow riders in. This makes you all less traceable. Cover your face and identifying features. Always check for police before evading the fare. Remember, contracted security guards have no authority to stop or detain passengers. RIDE FREE, FUCK THE NYPD, AND FREE PALESTINE!

ultimately, the logical conclusion to this kind of thing is a cop at every MTA station which would be a hilariously ironic result for these aspiring anarchist revolutionaries.

The Upper West Side represents, to me, the peak of America. Of our confidence, gloriously embodied in homes & then towers whose aesthetic peaks are without peers. I’m always inspired here. Sadly, it also shows the loss of that confidence, of forlorn blocks and barren facades.

A protest like this in America would elect a president that would make Donald Trump look like Nelson fucking Mandela
Why can’t protests in the states be like this, people really settling for “No kings marches”

Wildly ahistorical take.
A good rule of history: if you find yourself opposing a student movement while siding with the ruling class, you're wrong. Every time, in every era, whatever the issue.
Community note
Student movements have not always been on the right side of history. Mao's student Red Guards persecuted hundreds of thousands. Students helped Castro and Khomeini rise to power, and Nazi student groups opposed the Weimar Republic. britannica.com/topic/Red-Guar… encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/art… aei.org/education/actu…
