“Cooper, visiting NZ to deliver a lecture at Victoria University of Wellington’s Centre for Strategic Studies, says we are “in a pretty good place” compared with most of America’s friends in the region, partly due to our ability to fly under the radar.”

If you're interested in Asia policy, then Noah Burke and I have gone through and compared what is in the House and Senate NDAAs to get a sense of what might be included in the final bill. Take a look here:

This week on Net Assessment we had a discussion I've wanted to have for a while about the future of think tanks and the impact of AI on our work. Take a listen!

Deeply honored to be the Sir Howard Kippenberger Visiting Professor in Strategic Studies for 2026 at @CSS_VUW. Many thanks to @davidcapie for the generous invitation.
I’m looking forward to seeing many friends in New Zealand and discussing US-NZ relations in a few weeks!
I am delighted to announce that the @CSS_VUW Centre for Strategic Studies Sir Howard Kippenberger Visiting Prof in Strategic Studies for 2026 is @ZackCooper from the American Enterprise Institute. His lecture will explore what American foreign policy might look like after Trump.
I was underwhelmed when it looked like the big deliverable both sides actually announced at this Trump-Xi summit was the lease of two pandas…
But it never occurred to me that an American president might offer to sell American weapons to China. 🤬
Trump asked Xi Jinping if China wants to buy US weapons.
US ambassador to China David Perdue made the claim on Fox News today. He did not make clear if Trump asked this week, or on another occasion such as at the May summit.

What is the future of U.S.-China relations? Will tensions boil over, or can the world's two biggest economies learn to work together? @jessicacweiss and @ZackCooper go head-to-head on the latest episode of Counterpoint, a podcast from FP in partnership with @DohaForum: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcas…
Just in time for Xi's visit, @ForeignPolicy asked @jessicacweiss and me to debate whether we can build stable US-China ties.
Unfortunately, I don't see any signs that we are addressing the fundamental structural problems in the relationship.

We’re going to hear a lot about “constructive strategic stability” the next few days.
I argue here that the current US approach to China is neither constructive nor strategic. Any short-term stability will come at the expense of long-term security.

When Donald Trump met Xi Jinping in Beijing in May 2026, the two leaders agreed to establish a relationship of “constructive strategic stability.”
Unfortunately, the new strategy is neither constructive nor stable. Check out @ZackCooper's full article: aei.org/commentary/a-false-s…

POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE, SIGNIFYING NOTHING.
That's my Trump-Xi take... Few deals. No breakthroughs. But thankfully no US concessions on Taiwan or tech.
Hard to call this summit a success, since it didn't really address any US-China structural problems. Yet not a disaster either.
Big thank you to Sal @mercoglianos for hosting this discussion with @johnkonrad on the (now nuclear!) battleship.
I think we'd be better off building subs and smaller ships given the battleship's cost and complexity. But we had a good time, so listen and decide for yourselves:
