And here it is... footage of our #BloodFlowRestrictionExercise experiment with @SpaceX #Fram2 the first ever BFR exercise in microgravity performed by the @framonauts while orbiting the Earth in space! An important step for the development of BFR as an exercise countermeasure for spaceflight, as we demonstrate that it is possible to automatically measure limb occlusion pressure and auto-regulate target pressure to perform BFR exercise in microgravity, where astronaut's physiology and blood flow behaves differently in the absence of gravity. Huge thanks to @SpaceX for qualifying and flying the Delfi Personalised Tourniquet System for Spaceflight (PTSS) for BFR and our experiment, and to the @framonauts for completing the experiment. Another fun (and active!) series of experiments on our @framonauts mission. Project: Efficient Exercise 💪🏻 Question: How can we a) shorten necessary exercise time and b) develop a portable device for use in space? Fun facts: - We tested blood flow restriction (BFR) training with a compact resistance device - BFR limits blood return from muscles, simulating high-load workouts using much lighter weights - This causes micro-damage in muscle tissue (similar to regular intense exercise) triggering growth and repair - In microgravity, regular exercise is essential to prevent muscle atrophy and bone density loss - Astronauts currently exercise 2+ hours a day - our goal is to reduce that without losing benefits. - The tested device is lightweight, portable, and could save valuable time and space onboard missions Institutes: Northumbria University, Sheffield Hallam University Find the full list of projects here: f2.com/research.pdf #fram2 Music creds: jiglr - Lapse

Very happy to see our new project led by Northumbria University, 'Project BioPTSS', funded by the @spacegovuk International Bilateral Fund Call 2, amongst other world-leading space projects. Our project partners include: @NASA @csa_asc @esa @DelfiMedical Western Clinical Engineering & Kayser Space Ltd. Building upon the success of our previous projects funded by @spacegovuk @boryung_corp @Axiom_Space @aurelia_labs @SpaceX this project will integrate cutting-edge biofeedback technology into our space-qualifiable PTSS hardware, which recently flew to orbit with @SpaceX Fram2 mission @framonauts marking the first time in history that BFR exercise was performed in orbit. This project will enable real-time, remote monitoring and optimisation of the #BloodFlowRestrictionExercise stimulus in space, which is critical as terrestrial data demonstrates the importance of the capability to individualise the BFR stimulus to increase efficacy and maximise safety.
We’re boosting 23 international projects with £6.5m!🚀 These collaborations with global partners span cutting-edge areas from lunar agriculture to orbital threat detection - demonstrating the UK's commitment to global partnerships and innovation. 🤝🌍 👉 gov.uk/government/news/uk-sp…

Very happy to see our new paper with @csa_asc now online in @ExpPhysiol (co-authors Yannick Laflamme and Étienne Chassé). For the first time ever, we demonstrated that it is possible to perform BFR exercise using the Delfi PTS for BFR during microgravity exposure in parabolic flight, using flywheel exercise. Alongside our recent successful #Fram2 mission with @SpaceX to perform the first ever BFR exercise experiment on-orbit in Dragon with the @framonauts these two experiments mark a huge milestone in the development of BFR exercise as a countermeasure to optimise crew health and performance in spaceflight missions to LEO, the Moon, and eventually Mars. Lots more in the pipeline... physoc.onlinelibrary.wiley.c…

Our new paper investigating tourniquet cuff pressure regulation during #BFR exercise is now online in @FrontSportsAL We conducted the most in-depth analysis of tourniquet cuff pressure regulation during BFR exercise to date, across several commercially available devices. Key findings: 1. Tourniquet cuff pressure during BFR exercise behaves in a wave-like manner characterised by cyclical pressure peaks and valleys. 2. Despite target pressure being set at 80% LOP, participants experienced tourniquet pressures >100% LOP using the Saga, SmartCuffs, and Suji BFR devices, for up to ~30-55% of the exercise set duration. Only the Delfi PTS was able to regulate pressure within the target pressure window. 3. A progressive loss of pressure occurred throughout the BFR application period by an average of 2-4mmHg•min-1 (~1-2% LOP•min-1 ) in the Saga, SmartCuffs, and Suji BFR devices, but the Delfi PTS maintained target pressure A central question must be raised: what tourniquet cuff pressures have researchers and practitioners actually been applying with these other devices? And what impact does this have on safety and efficacy of the BFR stimulus? More to follow... frontiersin.org/journals/spo…
