This year I had to say no to a huge opportunity I had been dreaming about for a year.
Because of religion.
A few months ago I got accepted to the US Cyber Combine.
Which is the boot camp for the US Cyber Team.
It’s an intensive program designed to help you prove yourself ahead of draft day in October.
Unfortunately, both final competitions, the final exams if you will, were on the Sabbath.
And while the program was so kind to try and work with me,
Ultimately I decided to withdraw since most competitions I’d compete in if I made the team would also be on the Sabbath.
This isn’t the first time the Sabbath has prevented me from participating in these opportunities.
Hackathons, BSides NY, conferences - all on or over the Sabbath.
Many might see religion, then, as a disadvantage, and so did I until last year.
I felt like I was missing so many opportunities!
Now I don’t know what I would do without it (and THAT change is a story for another time ;)
25 hours, no screens, no work, just reconnecting.
Sometimes the hardest opportunities to walk away from are the ones that remind you what matters most.
So as we go into Shabbat in a few hours here in NYC,
Shabbat shalom!
