I got some polyester garments from everyone in Tokyo, which got me thinking about the generalized “cotton / wool good and poly bad” conversations
Do I think adding stretch to jeans is wack? Yes.
Do I think brands use synthetics to cut corners and make things like overcoats cheaper? Yes.
And generally, fast fashion companies deploy synthetics to make things for less—items which ultimately are discarded in short order.
But do I think the polyester twill work jacket I bought is inherently shitty because it’s made from a synthetic versus classic cotton? Not necessarily.
It gives the fabric a unique feel, it maintains its shape better than cotton, wrinkles less, and is more durable in terms of abrasion, breaking down, and even UV
End of life situations are of course a valid critique, but if someone wore this jacket for 20 years and their cotton one faded and ripped after 5, and they got 3 more in that time, what is ultimately more sustainable?
Again I’m not totally sure I have all the answers here, but I think it’s worth wondering at a time when the natty fiber crowd has become a little overzealous
