I make video games. Gamer. Solo dev. Also known as 孔迪.

Mons Insignis
Be a theater kid -> Call gamers sweaty nerds and weirdos for enjoying video games for many years until it hits mainstream -> Abuse HR to take over game studios -> Turn games into political propaganda machines instead of focusing on making them fun Gamers used to not give a crap about politics and just had fun together until you goobers came along. Games are meant to be fun, not political propaganda machines.
Here is a hard pill to swallow. Conservatives and Right wingers never went to Game Development, the talent and the skills are in the West Coast. Don't cry if the Human Capital has liberal views when you and many conservatives didn't even tried to enter the industry
Community note
Conservatives have long worked in game development, including outspoken Republican Doug TenNapel (Earthworm Jim) and Scott Cawthon (Five Nights at Freddy's). Studios and talent exist across the US and elsewhere, including Austin and Montreal, not only the West Coast. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doug_TenN… catholicgamereviews.com/christian-game… itch.io/post/311300 techcrunch.com/2020/06/26/whe… en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_i…

It costs 1.5-2k to publish on the IOS store and it is even more flooded than this. A higher fee won’t fix this.
Do you think Steam raising the game submission fee to $500-1000 per game while reducing its revenue cut to 20% would be the best way to combat the flood of AI generated low effort games being released on Steam? or is there no solution to this. #gamedev #indiedev

Just learned genre-fundamentals exists and my game accidentally covers most of it. Is this something to formally design around, or more of an informal checklist?

The process is only interesting after the product is great. Nobody cares that I’m a solo dev when they see my Steam page. Nor should they. The only selling point that matters is “this game is good.”

Even for small Indie games, there is a bunch of chaos when getting the prototype into finished polished game stage.

Cinematic quality hair + Real time path tracing for a 10 FPS dip? That's a steal.

Rockstar CEO: “We don’t use generative AI.” Rockstar devs 3 weeks from launch: 👀 Funny how the PC version, the one that would need a Steam AI disclosure, is the one that’s delayed.

Gaben has commanded game devs to go all in on AI. Amen.
NEVER trust future of gaming in the hands of Valve

Everyone can make a YouTube video. Not everyone is a YouTuber. Making a game and making a game people will pay for are two very different things.
Everyone's worried the market will get flooded now that anyone can make a game. Most people are consumers to their core. Finishing something still takes hundreds or thousands of hours, and the vast majority will never put that time in no matter how easy the tools make it.

Anything read as low effort or hacks is a insta-pass for me. A wishlist only gets a second look. When I don't buy the wishlist it is either fails the low effort test on a second look or I am just waiting for a Steam sale.
I saw a reddit post earlier by an indie dev that said his game had 14k wishlists at launch, but less than 300 sales after a week. Just curious, what's the main reason you would wishlist but not buy? I'm assuming price, but anything else?

Tokenomics: The new moat in software. Nobody is vibe coding the Linux kernel, yet...
One thing I have come to learn is the importance of having a product you are currently selling. ANY product. Yes, there is no technical moat anymore. The moat is token months. Pre-AI software can mostly be one-shotted because it is shallow and relatively simple, but software built in the agentic age would require the same amount of token time to build from scratch. This means an agentic project that started 6 months ago, which has been compounding daily, stands to be in a perpetual lead against a project just starting today. Pre-AI, incumbents also had this advantage, but they would start to fatigue quickly from the buildout, allowing newcomers to disrupt them. Fatigue is now largely a thing of the past.

Tencent invests in everyone and can influence everyone in gaming. Except Valve because, they are Valve and always do their own thing thankfully.
To get League of Legends and Valorant onto Omarchy, it'll help to have good friends at Tencent!

Tim Sweeney -> Self-taught programmer -> Designed three programming languages -> Wrote UnrealScript’s compiler and VM himself -> Building his latest, Verse, with the creator of Haskell and the co-creator of Scheme @TimSweeneyEpic is a pretty cracked programmer if you ask me.
Replying to @crierlon
yanno, I haven't seen proof of Tim being a good programmer yet.

I am going have to upgrade my CPU ASAP. Serious agentic engineering blows up your CPU if you aren't careful from agents pulling up 10-40 instances without you on alert.
MacBook Neo ran out of RAM first day on remote agentic running... Worst offenders: Codex = 3GB XCode = 2GB Steam = 1GB Had to kill them all to make it continue. As expected 8GB is not good enough for dev purposes. AI makes it even worse. But it's a great test device.

AI agents are CAD for software engineers. CAD didn’t simplify mechanical engineering; it raised the ceiling. Expect software to get more complex, not less.
We have had democratising game development tools for a while now. Unity, Unreal, to name but two. And while it is possible for the inexperienced to 'make a game' the quality bar between their output and the output of an experienced team is huge. Asking an agent to 'make a game' and see something functional be produced is quite the parlour trick, but don't confuse that with what a capable and experienced team will be able to produce using agents. The quality difference will be enormous. Tim Sweeney is completely correct. Agents help solve one of the biggest problem which has plagued game development for well over a decade... complexity. Strap in, because game development is being turbo charged.

This is bullshit, Kenney. I’m the same tech tree following optimist who moved from C to C++, from 2D to 3D, and from closed source to open source. I run a company. I write code. I contribute to published papers. I’ve upped my expectations of AI. Up yours!

Killing games is part of making a good game. Over the last year I killed 5 until I found a loop that generated play sessions. AI makes the failed experiments cheaper before you invest a ton of time into adding in assets.
Replying to @pvncher
Yes! Fun comes first. Nothing is more painful than a game development cycle where there’s a massive investment in code and content but the game isn’t fun yet. Fortunately AI makes rough prototyping and trying out ideas way faster, and accessible to every designer.

Can we stop pretending writing code is an art? “Programmer art” was shorthand for shitty art before AI slop was a thing.
