PhD, Mental Health Nurse, Lecturer, Researcher, Writer. Interested in philosophy, 'personality disorder' and mental health care. Own views. #MHDeservesBetter

Leaving Malta again after my second trip here in two weeks, delivering training on mentalizing approaches to mental health professionals. Great engagement and discussion from attendees. I stand by mentalization being a useful approach in any circumstances.
Interesting time in Oban joining the Royal Society of Edinburgh's Young Academy of Scotland. Met a lot of people across a hugely diverse array of disciplines. Interesting conversations and project ideas.
Just leaving Malta after teaching Mentalizing Approaches for complex mental health problems to mental health staff. I have always found mentalization to be a simple yet subtle and nuanced concept, which can facilitate useful understandings and help scaffold our conversations.
7 hour train journey home, and another BIGSPD done. Great opportunity to connect with others and hear about interesting ideas in the field of 'personality disorder' #BIGSPD26
I'll shortly be presenting on risk formulation through using the action/consequences model at #BIGSPD26 in Blackpool. To see more, a webinar where I discuss the model is here. (I start 12 minutes in)

One of the things I'm most looking forward to this year, is having been selected to deliver the annual Skellern Lecture. I plan on discussing how MH nursing may be constrained by ideas of 'nursing', and the relationship with psychiatry. Learn more: skellern.info/
When people diagnosed with 'borderline personality disorder' are told they are "too unstable for therapy", this harms their self-concept, and also seems to rather bizarrely demand that people get well before they are treated. Explore further, open access: tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.…
Whilst I'm always a little disappointed that fellowship never seems to mean I get to band together with mythical peoples to take a mysterious ring to Mount Doom, I am pleased to have been successful in my application to become a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
I leave Malta this morning, having been welcomed by mental health nursing colleagues, opening their annual conference with a keynote, and delivered some teaching around 'personality disorder' and mentalization to hospital staff. Similar challenges for MH nursing across nations.
Enjoyed connecting with colleagues at the mental health nursing leaders summit in Barcelona. The plan is to establish an international council for mental health nursing, and my heart is fully behind this project, but my head wonders how it will work and what impact it can have.
Enjoyed talking to mental health staff in Perth today, discussing the action/consequences model and the ethics of responding to risk when working with people diagnosed with 'personality disorder'. Anyone interested can see more from this webinar: piped.video/sC3CVq10XCM?si=Y8DM…
As an @theRCN member I get @NurseStandard through the post each month. Claims to be your 'essential nursing journal', yet there is often little to no content around mental health. As a mental health nurse, that is what is essential.
I was at an RCN Mental Health Forum listening event this evening, and there is still a lot of discontent around mental health nurse education. I raised this issue at RCN congress in 2022, but it seems little has changed: #MHDeservesBetterpiped.video/xYwmZYthm5M
Excited about attending this event, which will work towards the establishment of an international council of mental health nursing and discuss mental health nursing priorities.
We also had our first in person conferences since 2019, at @AbertayUni Dundee in 2024 and 2025. These conferences have had more and more lived experience representation, both in attendance as well as contributing to presentations, and that is the only way forward. (3/4)
The last 6 years has been a privelege, to keep the network going through covid with online conferences, co-producing three animations to raise awareness and information about 'personality disorder' (2/4) scottishpersonalitydisorder.…
Yesterday was my last Scottish Personality Disorder Network conference as part of the executive group. Time poverty means I sadly cannot do everything I want to. (1/4)
A busy but enjoyable BIGSPD is over. I come away with new connections and ideas, some great feedback on my own presentation, and lovely to see some of Liverpool. #BIGSPD25
This morning at #BIGSPD25 I'm presenting on the action/consequences model, a thinking tool for working with recurrent suicidality.
A longer recording of me talking about it is available here: piped.video/sC3CVq10XCM?si=yMuT…
The new album from @pelicansong is superb. Best yet? Tough competition but it's certainly up there. Enjoying more with each listen. Every song takes you on a journey.
Knackered. First organised run in 15 years. A 10k in 1hr 10 secs. In aid of Kayleighs Wee Stars. An excellent local charity. Check them out. kayleighsweestars.co.uk/
Often forgotten, a reminder of Mental Health Nurses on #InternationalNursesDay. Unique issues mean unique education is needed. A creeping genericism and adultification of education will not improve the quality of care. It will get worse. #MHDeservesBetterpiped.video/iBblQygAizs
A pleasure to be invited to talk to NHS Tayside staff today, about the action/consequences model and ethical approaches to risk for people diagnosed with 'personality disorder'. More about the model at this webinar here:

Following the Nursing Times article "RCN questions separation of mental health nurse training", this response went to Mental Health Forum members on 7th April.
Reviewing an article, and I was wondering why I felt a surge of malevolence and pedantry boiling inside my dark soul, dying to be taken out on an unsuspecting author. The fiery red demon of reviewer 2 almost posessed me. But... I resisted, and was nice.

Some lovely feedback from training social work teams around 'personality disorder' today. Critique of the diagnosis, reminder of the humans behind the labels, and emphasis on the importance of relationships. Contact me at: danwarrender.wordpress.com/
I enjoyed presenting some of my PhD research in Glasgow today, at an NCISH toolkit event with mental health nurses from across Scotland. Recognition of failings and enthusiasm for change.
This from 2003 is an excellent analysis of mental health nursing in acute inpatient settings, which details nurse experiences, and calls for an abolition of these settings in their current form. Still pertinent over 20 years later.
After 8 years enrolled as a PhD student, I graduated last week. Behind this picture and moment crossing the stage was a lot of graft, self-doubt, stress, but ultimately love for the topic that saw me through. To hear about my study, follow this link: piped.video/WnjfFfItGnQ
Took me a while to get into this, but was hooked once I fell into this dark atmospheric world of murder and conspiracy. I can see why it's seminal in the graphic novel world. Cracking writing and story, affecting artwork.
Best review: "I had a look at your presentation which I had seen on social media previously but never watched - I thought it was just a disgruntled burnt out nurse approaching retirement ... sorry. To my surprise you echoed many things I have brought up" piped.video/iBblQygAizs
First time at Royal College of Nursing Headquarters in London. Attending an induction as I join the Mental Health Forum Steering Committee. Looking forward to getting started.
Like many others I have now joined BlueSky. Musk has turned this place into more of a toilet than it ever was. Follow me there and please share: danwarrender.bsky.social
Such a pleasure to author this chapter on risk in mental health care with my friend @walkamileuk, and great to see it in print. The rest of the book looks great too.
Really appreciate the kindness and support of so many people after passing my PhD viva with no amendments this week. Have had this single malt saved for years. Dusted off before opening. My watch is over.
@ClaireCNWL this is 2 hours of me talking about the issues, but very happy to meet and I could give you the headlines in 30 minutes. piped.video/iBblQygAizs
400 views, but most haven't seen it. 2 hours on issues for #MentalHealth nursing and education. Worth knowing about this, otherwise the profession will disappear in front of our very eyes. #MHDeservesBetterpiped.video/iBblQygAizs
A companion presentation to my recent article, here I present on some of the threats to mental health nursing as a distinct profession, and call for action. Please watch, share, and let me know your thoughts. #MHDeservesBetterpiped.video/iBblQygAizs?si=3wJF…
This is a cracking graphic novel. For fans of sci-fi and adventure. Interesting believable characters with some heart in amongst the chaos. If you like the show stranger things you'd probably like this.
This from @JonHaidt is well worth a read. Social media and screen time during childhood can have a huge impact on mental health, and whilst it's complicated and there's nuance for sure, Haidt's ideas are worth reading and thinking about.
This is a great audiobook by @DaftLimmy. Feels honest, genuine, and it's never one generic thing. Made me laugh. Made me sad. Made me think about my own life. Well worth reading or listening.
