#BRCA#BreastCancer#healthEquity
Yesssss o my sister! The membership & financial contributions of Nigerians in @AORTIC_AFRICA is highly significant. Not to have AORTIC main conference in Nigeria even once while other countries have hosted twice continues to be puzzling. Time for main conference is in #Nigeria
Recent data showed that Ikorodu local government area of Lagos State, with a population of over 1mil1 million the LGA with the highest 10-year cancer incidence per million inhabitants. Yet, no cancer screening facility in that community.
ascopubs.org/doi/full/10.120…
We were honored to have the king and another king from a nearby kingdom show up for screening.
This is community leadership at its best.
We screened over 150 men during this 2-day event.
The Igbogbo community put together an outstanding host team, led by Dr Andu of the General Hospital, Ikorodu, the health supervisor at the Local Council Development Area, and others. They were the heroes of this outreach.
Our team included 3 Urologists, @ABeR_center behavioral scientists led by @cathbadejo1, and a host of basic scientists, including @kemirotimi, @attitte, @opedeCampos.
Well, we have more females on our team who care about men!
I am the only man in my lab!
🥁📣📢 Grant Alert! Nothing beats coming from @AACR#AACRMICR#Cancer#HealthDisparities meeting to learn that two of my @MayoCancerCare fellows have been awarded $50,000 grant by @MayoEquity to address health disparities! Congrats to Dr. @opedeCampos & Dr. Crook. Our lab is 🔥

I'm honored to be opening up the @AORTIC_AFRICA#AORTIC2021 with an educational session and methods workshop on cancer genomics.
Thanks to @crdfglobal for funding this session and supporting the registration of 25 young African investigators.
Advancing cancer control in Nigeria will require an upscale in clinical trials, was a clear message delivered by @AorticP at the ongoing @arconconf2021
Tomorrow, I'll be speaking in the unique genomic profiles of cancers in Nigeria. Such uniqueness makes clinical trials important
It's the D-Day and we are excited to welcome twenty resident doctors and clinical trainees to @CUHEBRON and @capicace for the Cancer Genomics Workshop.
The participants are from institutions across Nigeria, Benin Republic, and Sierra Leone.
Cancer Genomics Workshop!!!
Addressing the gap in cancer genomics in Africa requires us to develop a critical mass of scientists and physicians with the needed skills to generate, process, and utilize African genomic data. We have received funding support from the @crdfglobal....

If you are a Nurse, Nursing Intern, or Nursing Student interested in developing capacity in this crucial area, @BIOVentures, through its African Access Initiative is offering a series of training to close this gap.
Thanks to @elfarukpath11 for sharing this with me
Thank you @GLOBOCAN_GCO for the great work you are doing for global cancer control. Your data always signposts where we stand and how long the road towards global cancer equity is. Interesting to see that leading cancer across Africa clustered by geography.
Excited to get this paper out with Jen and the team. This will hopefully be our first of many combining multiple 'omics' analyses to better understand the impact of the early life environment on maternal and child health.
Identifying the tools for interrogating cancer genome is important for early-stage learners. @Now_UALCAN is a goto site for hypothesis development and identifying molecular drivers of cancer in different racial or stage cohorts.
Thank you @Varambally_S for speaking to us @CaPTC7
We are now excited to be joined by Dr Bassiouni of @UscDtg@CaRE2HEC as she gives an overview of CRISPR-Cas9 and it's applications in basic and clinical cancer research.

My #ReTOOL2020 mentee, @CJazminOrozco poster presentation @aacr#aacrdisp20 demonstrated the clear evidence of the contribution of testosterone to disease disparity across Africa.
Worthy of the highlight is the pioneering role of mentors like @rreneereams of @famucare2. Her gene expression study laid the foundation for understanding how inflammation underpins the disparity in the biology of prostate cancer between Black and White men #blackinGeneticsweek
I'm #BlackInGeneticsWeek cus of mentorship of people like @djhazadus and @DrOdedina. I study cancer genomics in Africans to better understand a "complex disease of the genome" within the complexity of the genomes of Africans. Honored to be highlighted in @UscDtg talk today.

It’s indeed a honor and pleasant surprise to be so awarded. Thanks to @DrOdedina for being a good role model. I was blessed to mentor @CJazminOrozco. She is extremely hardworking, cerebral and outstanding. #retool2020
His thought on the critical roles of Pharmas in driving the inclusion of Africans in #clinicaltrials was instructive. Thanks to @AORTIC_AFRICA president, Dr Bello @BelloAb83353676 for bringing that to the fore.
The talk on 'A Research Agenda for Genomic Discoveries
in People of African Ancestry' was eruditely delivered by Dr Carpten. Thanks for your love for Nigeria and your passion for developing capacity and mentoring.
Also in attendance were @CaRE2HEC co-PI Dr Reams of @famucare2

It's important for Nigerian researchers to increase their engagement on social media. @twitter is an excellent tool for outreach, which is one essence of academics. The takehome message is that social media drives research impact and citation.
Thank you @fodedina and @cjnwosu
It’s exciting to speak to outstanding Nigerian academics at grant writing pre-summit workshop of the inaugural Nigeria-Diaspora Biomedical research summit @DiasporaNGR.
6/ A lesson from Genomics of SC
Genomics is now unraveling why some SC patients do better.
Though the condition is caused by 1 gene, each patient's experience varies partly because there are 5/6 types of this variation.

Many thanks to you, @AACR_CEO and your outstanding team for putting together this virtual meeting. The presentations were top-notch. I look forward to Day 2.
What an amazing day! Thanks to everyone who joined us for Day 1 of the @AACR Virtual Annual Meeting I. Please join us at 9:00 a.m. EDT tomorrow, Tuesday, April 28 for a special Virtual Plenary Session on #COVID19 and Cancer.
Genetic diversity among human populations is driving the mutation of #COVIDー19 virus. The virus is genetically different even in Africa.
African inclusion in #COVID19 clinical trial is good for health equity.
Follow @DrOdedina to learn about #ClinicalTrialAfrica
Well, it's the reality of the world we live in. It's called weaponized lies by @danlevitin. Most people just swallow whatever they are fed with, irrespective of the source or its rationality.

#HealthyEating is not about wealth or price; it is about eating what is good for your body. In fact, despite poor economy, West African countries have healthier diet than wealthier regions in North America and Europe bit.ly/2CtMWfR
We don't need foreign food!
I consider it a great honor to be followed by @theNCI. Whao!
Thank you for the great work you are doing at supporting cancer research globally, particularly in Africa through @NCIEpiTraining, @NCIGlobalHealth,@NCIgenomics
Guess what? Africans only represent 2.4% of all available genomic data. This means that close to little is known about us. go.nature.com/33h0Lu0
Something has to be done ASAP. We are more genetically diverse than any other race. They came out of us.
I am excited to be part of a great team doing translational cancer research, utilizing cutting-edge technology and convergent science. It's a huge honor to be acknowledged at #AACR19 opening plenary. Thanks, @FulbrightPrgrm, @CaPTC7, @UscDtg, @CUHEBRON, @AfricaRch, @DrOdedina
What an upsurge!
Knowing that the initial publications in the early 1900s showed a low incidence of cancer among blacks, particular Nigerians.
