Today was one of those days. No pictures. Didn't even think to take any. Then my son looked at me and said, "this is the best day ever." That's the whole album. May God bless you with days like this.

Our first Anchorage Digital Institute during SIBOS brought together senior bankers and decision makers for an in-person event to discuss the evolving stablecoin landscape. Highlights included our Head of International Banking, Monica Ramirez de Arellano, and our Chief Compliance Officer, Dustin Palmer, discussing the company’s regulatory, correspondent banking, and tokenization expertise, with curated fireside chats with leaders from Banco Azteca. From issuance to settlement, we provide the full stack of capabilities institutions need to modernize how money moves.

On November 18, 1883, America lived through the same noon twice, because the railroads decided the country could no longer run on thousands of local clocks. The law caught up 35 years later. Finance is at the same moment now. Read the full story below.

Money's Day of Two Noons

The day of two noons On November 18, 1883, at railroad stations across America, trainmen stood watching the clocks with their watches in hand. In Chicago, when the depot clock reached noon, it was

Mr President has lost touch. Abit.
🚨 OBAMA ON AI: "If we are thinking about AI just in terms of how do we cure cancer or get better energy, you can do that without having agentic AI and having it just roaming free in the internet. The reason you are doing that is because you have to market a product that people will pay money for. That’s a misalignment between what our society needs and the commercial imperatives that these companies are facing, not because necessarily they’re trying to do bad things, but because they’ve got to justify these valuations. So, that’s one more reason why it is really important for us to have a competent government and a serious bipartisan conversation around this issue, and we have to do it fast. And I would encourage voters to pay attention to this. If somebody does not have a serious plan for how to deal with this, then they’re not meeting the moment, and you should probably look for somebody else."

Today I attended a funeral service at a certain church. Stayed back to catch up with a few friends. About an hour after the funeral service that ended at 10am, a wedding entrouge arrived. Life goes on.

Stablecoin issuance in US dollars could reach the trillions. Getting there takes clear rules for moving that much money from traditional rails onto blockchain rails. The GENIUS Act delivers them. The CLARITY Act would do the same for digital asset markets.

The service in Africa is so good that I wish we had a mandatory tipping culture compared to what you’d typically get in the US. I mean the Uber Eats guy can up 5 floors without a lift. Try to get that in San Francisco. The waitress will recommend the right dish when she sees you’re confused. She will rush to the table and bring the menu, make some conversation. The things we take for granted.

For your entire life you've grown up thinking the map of Africa was accurate, and then in your mid 30s you learn from BBC that well, what you see in the picture isn't what you really get. Then you do research and learn this has always been known. National Geographic dropped the Mercator default in 1922, before you were even born. Yet for some strange reason your geography teacher in school kept using it. Probably because they didn't know either. I mean, who is really scrutinizing the size of Greenland whilst in Africa? Lesson: what other things have we believed for life that are false? And how should this shape how we inform the next generation?

So… I’ve joined @Anchorage, to scale stablecoin correspondent banking across Africa. Honest story. When I first joined this industry in 2017, I was drawn in because everyone said Bitcoin was going to make us rich. As a young professional that was reason enough. Plus the job was 100% remote. Fast forward, the work got real. If crypto is meant to bank the unbanked, where are the most unbanked people on earth? Africa. So that became my career, nine years of building on ramps and opening markets, from Binance’s first fiat gateway on the continent to USDC adoption across the region while at Coinbase. During this time, stablecoins have gone from a trader's parking spot to how value actually moves here. But the banks are still locked out. Correspondent banks have been quietly leaving Africa for a decade, and what remains is slow, expensive, and closed on weekends. African banks watch dollar flow leak to rails their risk committees can’t approve. That’s the job now. Anchorage Digital is a federally chartered US bank, and I’m bringing its regulated settlement rail to African banks. The riches were the bait. The problem was the hook. Now let’s get the banks on.

African founders need to understand even VCs are running a business. Earlier this year, about 10 slots opened up at YCombinator for blockchain companies, courtesy of Coinbase, and I (+@deriq_eth) fought all we humanly can to get 2 of the most matured African startups in the list. During the interview, YC asked one of them - "how big is the market you're serving?" At the time, 80% of their customers were from Africa. YC turned them down with a note "once you expand your client-base globally, pls get back to us." Today, that startup is aggressively expanding into Latam & EU. The conditions are not ideal, but VCs don't see the African market as big enough to take a bet. That is the problem.
Because the loudest among us don't seem to understand what a startup is and the fact we keep outsourcing the risk and then complain about ownership. I hope this puts to end the mental laziness.

Maybe Africans should stop building startups.

To say the least, I am honestly embarrassed to write this. I assumed we all knew what a startup was. But the more I listen to the way people talk about startups, especially on this side of the world,

Chimamanda says "Never admire quietly." How many times does your partner come back from the salon looking great and you say nothing? Or the best you manage is "you should do your hair like that more often," instead of just telling her she looks good. Then a colleague does work that was better than it needed to be, and you notice and stay quiet. Then your boy shows up looking sharp, and you clock it and say nothing. I fall short here more than I'd like to admit. Guys, resolve to admire publicly.
