@GovKathyHochul is helping bail out seven financially troubled New York cities. Every single one has a Democratic mayor.
Not one Republican-led city among them.
We’re talking about approximately $4.25 billion in state financial assistance and budget actions.
New York City: $4 billion.
Buffalo, Yonkers, Albany, Rochester, Syracuse and Mount Vernon: another $252 million combined.
Some are still raising taxes or proposing increases despite receiving additional state assistance.
And who helps pay for this? Taxpayers across New York State, including those living in Republican-led communities.
To be clear, Republican-led municipalities receive ordinary state aid, too. But all seven cities singled out for these major budget-gap assistance packages are run by Democrats.
Look at the attached table. I’ve broken down the assistance by city, population and dollars per resident.
Hochul and these mayors owe taxpayers an explanation.
Why do these cities need extraordinary assistance? What are they doing to fix their recurring budget problems? And what happens when the money runs out?
You can’t keep plugging recurring budget holes with temporary money and pretend you’ve fixed anything.
