The thing needs to be normalized to 1, and the integral over the entire number line of e^-(x^2) is sqrt(pi), so you have to divide it out. And the integral is sqrt(pi) because you can turn it into a 2D integral of a rotated 1D integral, where the rotation adds a pi factor.
