At the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology in Münster, Germany, scientists teamed up with tire maker Continental to tap an unexpected local replacement: the Russian dandelion (Taraxacum koksaghyz). By using DNA marker-assisted breeding, researchers bred high-yield dandelion plants whose roots are packed with milky white natural latex containing the exact same long-chain cis-1,4-polyisoprene rubber molecules as tropical rubber trees. To extract the rubber cleanly, engineers developed a solvent-free hot-water milling process that separates pure latex rubber and inulin from the harvested roots. Unlike tropical rubber trees that require equatorial climates and seven years of growth, rubber dandelions can be harvested every single year on poor, non-arable European soil right next to the tire factories — slashing shipping miles and protecting rainforests.
