One of Australia's MPs was the target of an assassination attempt by a radical left-wing terrorist and terror sympathiser. Regardless of political beliefs, this should be condemned unequivocally. This is not the kind of Australia we want.
#BREAKING 🚨 Home Affairs minister Tony Burke has told the ABC that Indi MP Helen Haines was struck twice yesterday "What witnesses have described is a driver doing a u-turn to get into the car park and to ram Helen against her vehicle, then to reverse and do it a second time"

People who will be hit hardest are those who came from traditional delivery leadership roles and suddenly found themselves managing AI-related delivery. Unless they become hands-on to a meaningful degree, many of those middle-management roles may simply not be needed in the near future. The number of people that needs to be managed within a team is shrinking. Information is propagated automatically, and gaps that previously required layers of coordination can increasingly be uncovered by AI. Most of the conventional delivery leadership tasks will be automated. If you are not a maker, regardless of your title, hard times may be ahead.

I often get emails from junior engineers asking me what to do. Here's what I just wrote to one of them

I do not support AUKUS. Drones are the future of warfare. Whoever wins the tech race will dominate the world. @AustralianLabor have ensured there is no chance of it being us, as they have decided to kill innovation by taxing ambition to the point that all smart people will find new countries to build their dreams in.

The next 2-3 years will be extremely lucrative for people who can augment their workflows with AI. These will be the years of arbitration, use them wisely. Create capital and invest in tangible assets. Because the rules of the game will change again, then.

Software engineering as we know it is already gone. The change just hasn't fully diffused through the industry yet, but it will very shortly. Think of agriculture from the 1940s to the 1970s and how mechanisation transformed the industry in roughly 30 years. Now compress that transformation by 10x.

The issue with AI is the people, not the tech. Devs have devoted their lives to a craft. Instead of focusing on how new tools can help them achieve the previously impossible, we have huge swaths of people who have never accomplished anything frothing at the mouth at the prospect of obsoleting people better than them. Directly spurred on by the execs of top "labs" marketing to the lowest of men.
The games we've long wanted, which didn't exist because they'd cost several times more to make than they'd earn back, will soon become possible. As will the games developers wanted to build, but couldn't with the resources available. It'll be a new golden age of gaming.

The ability to ask a good question will become far more important than the ability to provide a good answer over the next couple of years. If you can grasp the thinking behind that, you're well on your way to being ready for the AI era.

I find this valuable and encouraging.
We’re committing a portion of Anthropic’s shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new wholly owned entity dedicated entirely to the public benefit. It will start off with 5% of our shares. For every 50% increase in the company’s value over a set baseline, we can contribute up to an extra 2%, subject to our board’s discretion. In total, this means that roughly 20% of Anthropic’s shares are committed to the public good. Our co-founders have already pledged to donate 80% of their equity, and around half our employees are donating a portion of their equity as part of a donation matching program we’ve run since our founding. In the post below, we share more details about our new fund. anthropic.com/news/public-be…

The broader picture is that if Ukraine falls, Georgia and Moldova will follow suit, and then Romania and Bulgaria. Black Sea comes under full Russian control and Russian navy starts pressuring the Aegean for Mediterranean access, and Russian gunboats harassing Italian fishermen.
It struck me recently that people who support the endless Ukraine-Russia was because they "want to punish the aggressor" make the same mistake as people who during the Vietnam war supported the endless war "because if Vietnam falls, all of SE Asia will be communust". In both cases they were wrong because they failed to look at a broader picture and at the future.

Nobody wants to hire juniors anymore. The commercial incentive is gone. AI has eaten much of the low-cost work through which juniors used to learn. Companies now want immediate output, not training costs. Education must move into companies: apprenticeships, real projects and structured learning. Universities should return to research and free thought, not pretend to be vocational factories. The world has changed. Keep teaching for the old one and graduates will pay the bill.
Anthropic is on track to stop hiring technical juniors by 2027
