most impressive thing about this is that somewhere, someone actually got access to a Qualcomm datasheet. Reshoring American manufacturing is trivial in comparison
the crazy bastard is doing it, amazing. also there's nothing really crazy about it, you can just do things.

Imagine your net worth is $200,000. One day an armed gang comes up to your house and demands $10,000. “Don’t worry!” the leader says. “I’m only going to do this one time. Plus, it’s only 5% of your net worth. What’s the big deal ?” After he leaves, you call the cops, but they aren’t interested in investigating the matter. “What’s the big deal?” they tell you. “After all, it’s only 5% of your net worth!” As you’re preparing to flee the city for a place where you cannot be robbed, Gabriel Zucman appears on your doorstep. “Why are you leaving?” he asks. “Somebody just robbed me and the police aren’t going to do anything. I want to live somewhere I can’t be robbed!” “But sir,” says Mr Zucman, “Have you considered the fact that the man told you it was a one-time tax ? Have you considered that you gain nothing by leaving since the tax is already paid ? There’s no economic reason for you to leave anymore.”
What amazes me is the attitude of so many of the centibillionaires. A 5% tax will not make any difference to the way they live. Their spending may be extravagant, but it is still much less than their (correctly measured) income. They know that, as gifted as some of them indeed are, they have benefited from extreme luck (and the help of the state, and, to speak like an economist, monopoly rents). They know that their effective tax rate is low, relative to what many others pay. They know that extreme inequality is extremely unpopular, and can lead to political unrest, backlash, or worse. They must admit that, morally, it is hard to argue for a society in which some become obscenely wealthy, while so many are poor and see their income stagnate. They typically have not indicated that they are building their wealth to eventually make the world a better place. But they are still willing to fight the tax, spending hundreds of millions in California to avoid paying the tax. Why? They simply think what is theirs is theirs, end of story. They believe in the slippery slope, and if they do not take a stand on this levy, the government will come back for more. They hate the state and the notion that their money will be misused? Or?

A Texas wedding venue is facing backlash after refusing to refund $15,909 to a woman whose fiancé, 25-year-old Diego Hernandez, died seven months before their wedding. Posey Meadows reportedly offered to transfer the booking or consider a partial refund if the date was rebooked, but the fiancée sued for her money back. The venue has since countersued, claiming she breached their contract by failing to pay the remaining balance. 📷 KSAT

Marc Andreessen reveals why housing, health care, and education keep getting more expensive while everything else gets cheaper "There's basically three components to the American dream. A house near great job opportunities, great health care for you and your family, and sending your kids to good schools" "If you disaggregate the economy over the last 25 years, everything that technology touches basically collapses in price. Television sets, computer games, anything with electronics in it. But if you chart housing, education, and health care, the prices of those things are skyrocketing" "The government restricts supply, zoning laws and university certifications. And then the government responds to the political pressure caused by the rising prices by subsidizing demand. And of course, if you subsidize demand and a fixed supply, you get skyrocketing prices"

Today we're standing up XBOX LABS (labs.xbox.com). Here is the note that I sent to the team: Team, The first video games emerged some 75 years ago. In the time since, there have been booms and busts, but every year there are more great games to play, more devices to play them, and best of all, more people than ever playing. That growth helped make XBOX what it is today, and we've helped shape the industry in return, from bringing hard drives to consoles and online gaming through Xbox Live to Game Pass and cloud gaming, alongside franchises that have brought millions of people together. In recent weeks, we've seen games rapidly decompiled and rebuilt to run on hardware they were never originally designed to support. Windows PC builds have been translated to run on Apple Silicon or ported to run inside a browser through WebAssembly and WebGPU, the latter now approaching 90% global browser support. Perhaps more surprisingly, we've seen many of the biggest games in the world have been remixed into the source code of another. These experiments challenge long-held assumptions about our industry: the tether between software and hardware, the boundary between creation and play, and how people discover and experience games. While it is hard to predict the future of gaming, it is easy to see the possibilities in making great games easier to access, giving old games new life and allowing more players to become creators and co-creators. These are unmistakably good outcomes for players, even when (and sometimes because) they challenge our existing business models. To explore these possibilities, I’ve asked Scott to stand-up XBOX LABS, a small group of game makers, engineers and scientists whose job is to turn emerging ideas into things our players and developers can experience. We'll build in the open, learn from what people do, and measure success by whether more people are playing and creating. I think XBOX has an important role to play here. Coding became the first major workload for agents because they can write, run, and test software. Games share many of those same properties, and people spend more than 72 billion hours a year playing XBOX games, roughly five times the estimated time spent writing code worldwide. We've spent 25 years learning how to make great games, and I want our game makers to help shape what these new technologies make possible. As we learn, we’ll share the tools we build with developers across the industry, just as we always have. Our priorities aren't changing. We remain committed to the 4Cs, to making great games, to our hardware and to being responsible stewards of IP and the communities built around it. LABS gives us a way to explore new technology that is game design led without abandoning the work already underway. Asha

Math, or any other field of science for that matter, does not exist, nor is it funded by citizens or taxpayers, simply to provide people with careers! Society has generously granted us scientists with prestige, status & resources in return for our responsibility to advance knowledge, contribute to humanity & move civilization forward. If AI or super-intelligence is able to do that better than our mission has been completed or we can now change our role to help steer it as long as we are able to add value. Unfortunately, academia has built ivory towers guarded by gatekeepers who have taken advantage of society’s generosity. Superintelligence is now challenging these gatekeepers and throwing the gates wide open. That is precisely why they are so upset.
NYU math professor Tristan Buckmaster says OpenAI’s Tuesday drop of 722 AI-generated math papers wiped out entire research programs: “This recent dump of papers on Tuesday destroyed the careers of early career mathematicians.”
