Congratulations to @LulaOficial and the people of Brazil on his historic fourth term, defeating Trump-backed Flávio Bolsonaro's far-right divisive campaign. A victory for democracy and proof that the far right is not invincible!
LLMs and the rest can't teach in the way a good teacher can but they can be great tools for building things to teach with - notes, slides and most of all, visualizations.
I know of Latour's writing on the environment (via Adam Tooze's newsletter) but never paid attention to his writings in this area.
Thank you. This will be most interesting.
Is there an article or paper that helps understand Latour's idea? That PL development is shaped by lineages as much as it is by computational requirements makes sense in some ways. Concrete literature would help understand it better.
Oh and the entire codebase is OSS MIT License at github.com/snarayanank2/beng…
We're hoping to use / adapt this for future urban body elections in different cities.
Donations go to Oorvani Foundation, the non-profit behind this: oorvani.org/support-us@oorvani
For scale, ₹3 lakh is about 0.00008% of what the city spends in a year. We'll tell you where ours went.
How you can help: money. Sorry.
The whole thing runs on roughly ₹3 lakh. That pays for AI that extracts information, people to check every candidate's affidavit by hand, sending voters reminders, and settling Google's bill each time someone looks up their ward.
Why bother? Nobody under thirty in this city has ever voted for a corporator. Neither has anyone who moved here in the last ten years, which in Bengaluru is a lot of people.
That's a great many first-time voters, and a ballot full of names they've never heard.
Also on there: your polling booth, how to vote, the issues in your ward, and questions worth putting to whoever rings your doorbell over the next few weeks.
All of it in English and Kannada.
Once candidates are announced, each one gets a report card: age, education, assets, criminal cases. All taken from the affidavit they swore themselves.
Same fields for everyone, side by side. We add no opinions. We'll use both AI and humans.
The first problem is basic. The wards have been redrawn: 369 of them now, across 5 corporations, and most people don't know which one they live in.
So step 1 is finding out which ward do you belong to.
It's called Bengaluru Votes: bengaluruvotes.opencity.in
A partnership between @oorvani@Janaagraha1 , plus volunteers like me. Not affiliated with any party, candidate or government body. We intend to be equally unhelpful to all of them.
Bengaluru last elected its ward councillors in 2015. Since then the city has spent about ₹38,455 crore a year with nobody local to blame for the pothole outside your gate.
The ward elections are coming soon, hopefully 🤞. A few of us are building something for them. 🧵
Do apply and come. It is a fabulous opportunity to quickly learn things in PL, logic and verification as well as meet all of us at FP Launchpad in Chennai.
FP Launchpad is running a PL Winter School between Dec 7th and 11th at IIT Madras: fplaunchpad.org/winter-schoo….
Application to attend will open early next week. Please share widely.
@ACTFibernet If this cannot be resolved by tomorrow, then something serious is not being communicated. Each time your engineer promises to come by and fix the issue then never picks up my calls again.
I will be forced to cancel by nexty week because I need reliable connectivity
