It is great to see this autonomous demonstration of an early CRISPR-like discovery hit mainstream, something that 10 years ago would have excited maybe 100 scientists globally. The more we can inspire disparate fields about new concepts, the faster we can identify breakthroughs.
Claude has discovered a previously unknown enzyme system hidden in the DNA of bacteriophages. Beside the enzyme’s gene sits a long array of repeating DNA—a structure that looks somewhat similar to CRISPR. We don’t yet understand what this system does, but only a handful of known systems share its features, and all of them are able to cut, copy, and paste DNA. Historically, the discovery of such programmable systems has helped revolutionize medicine. CRISPR, for instance, is now the foundation of genetic medicines. But it will take much more work to learn what this system does, and whether it can be put to similar use. Read more: anthropic.com/news/claude-di…

As agents shift the bottleneck away from hypothesis generation towards experimental validation, the next unlock should focus on closing the translational gap that too often prevents promising discoveries from reaching their potential to benefit humanity.

Wow. This is one of those discoveries that will catalyze more discoveries Congrats @Doudna_lab! 👏
Excited to share our discovery of a new programmable RNA-guided DNA-targeting system hiding inside bacteriophages that predates CRISPR. We call it VIPR (Viral Interference Programmable Repeat), and it uses an entirely new logic to find its targets. Thread + link below.

It's a pleasure working with Leah and the @Regeneron team on potential solutions with @mammothbiosci that combine two breakthrough platforms, CRISPR & tissue-specific delivery, to address the unmet need for patients living with genetic disease.
What happens when two #CRISPR experts share a vision? In episode 3 of The Nucleus, Regeneron’s Leah Sabin joins @mammothbiosci’s @janiceschen to discuss collaboration, ultra-compact gene editors, and why small enzymes are opening big doors in therapeutic delivery. 🦣 🧬

Congrats to the @mammothbiosci team on achieving efficient muscle editing with the ultracompact #CRISPR nuclease NanoCas, an important breakthrough that paves the way for curing a wide range of genetic diseases! A nice overview from @ScienceMagazine here: science.org/content/article/…
📢Excited to introduce NanoCas -our new mini CRISPR system that can reach tissues previously out of reach! By shrinking CRISPR to 1/3 its normal size, we can now edit genes in muscle, heart & brain that were difficult to access before. Summary & link to paper:

Hard to process this immeasurable loss. My heart goes out to the families and loved ones of everyone involved in this horrific tragedy.
U.S. Figure Skating can confirm that several members of our skating community were sadly aboard American Airlines Flight 5342, which collided with a helicopter yesterday evening in Washington, D.C. These athletes, coaches, and family members were returning home from the National Development Camp held in conjunction with the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas. We are devastated by this unspeakable tragedy and hold the victims’ families closely in our hearts. We will continue to monitor the situation and will release more information as it becomes available.
