Claude has discovered a previously unknown enzyme system hidden in the DNA of bacteriophages. Beside the enzyme’s gene sits a long array of repeating DNA—a structure that looks somewhat similar to CRISPR. We don’t yet understand what this system does, but only a handful of known systems share its features, and all of them are able to cut, copy, and paste DNA. Historically, the discovery of such programmable systems has helped revolutionize medicine. CRISPR, for instance, is now the foundation of genetic medicines. But it will take much more work to learn what this system does, and whether it can be put to similar use. Read more: anthropic.com/news/claude-di…

Excited to share the first pre-print from our lab!! Check it out here! biorxiv.org/content/10.64898… We found that many RNA-binding proteins understood to regulate RNA processing can also function like transcription factors and cofactors to directly regulate transcription.

(1/n) Super excited to share that our preprint is out today in @NatureSMB with a new name "Integrated MINFLUX tracking reveals two distinct chromatin dynamics classes across cell types" and more than 2x more data: nature.com/articles/s41594-0… MIT NEWS: news.mit.edu/2026/how-chroma…
(1/13) Thread on @mazzocca_matteo @DomenicNarducci @SGrosseHolz @_jessematthias new preprint Q: how does chromatin move? Using MINFLUX, SPT & SRLCI, we track chromatin dynamics across 7 orders of magnitude in time to provide some answers biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

The more we know about both the more lncRNAs and transcription converge. This took a while but very happy with how it turned out. Public full text view access here: rdcu.be/fgqIb
🆕 review with @jp_unfried out in @NatureSMB 🧐. Direct roles of lncRNAs in transcriptional activation. What do we understand about how lncRNAs lure Pol2 and set the stage for RNA production, and what do we still miss? nature.com/articles/s41594-0…

Sounds like a decision from a group of people who is tired, overworked and underfunded... which does not help how bad this is for science and how far from a "solution"... but I feel sympathetic for the people.
The number of grant applications is rising sharply. Our capacity for their evaluation isn’t. ERC President Maria Leptin explains why stricter resubmission limits are being introduced for 2027 calls and what this mean for applicants. link.europa.eu/xF7kjc

Where do you host the bigWig/bigBed files for your UCSC genome browser hubs? (pro-Iran hackers thought that our "nuclear RNA-seq" track data was, well, *nuclear* and yada yada yada we need a new server)

In a medical milestone, a customized base editor was developed, characterized in human and mouse cells, tested in mice, studied for safety in non-human primates, cleared by @US_FDA for clinical trial use, manufactured as a complex with an LNP, and dosed into a baby with a severe, rapidly progressing genetic disease... all in an astounding 7 months. Best of all, the infant patient shows apparent benefit. Congratulations to @kiranmusunuru, Rebecca Ahrens-Nicklas, and other team members for this heroic and inspiring effort, which has implications for the hundreds of millions of patients that suffer from thousands of genetic diseases. drive.google.com/file/d/1Jfk…
