Hello world! 👋
I'm Karina and I'm a creative technologist, software developer, and designer. I currently work as a new media exhibit technician for the Exploratorium in SF and I also freelance for startups under my own small agency (appropriately called KACHOW! LLC 🗯️ (1/7)
Did you know that Japan had its own version of the Dutch tulip bubble...but with rabbits?
When Japan reopened trade with the West at the end of the Edo period, they started purchasing foreign goods in droves and were introduced to domesticated European rabbits. (1/5)
The craze went beyond rabbit sales and into art, textiles, and more.
Eventually the craze went so insane that it attracted high crime so the Japanese government had to get involved and both taxed and required rabbit sales to be reported. This burst the bubble. (4/5)
Today, rabbits still remain a popular pet choice in Japan, partially because of their centuries-long folklore about them, partially because they are cute and quiet apartment-suitable pets, and perhaps partially because of this rabbit craze! (5/5)
3,000 followers! Thanks everyone for coming along my ride of building strange contraptions, sharing work I find inspiring, and talking tech! 🥹 🎉
(Totally expecting for someone to unfollow tomorrow just to mess with me 🤣)
What happens when artists get access to compute at the scale industry runs on?
Scaling Intelligence: Modal x Gray Area AI Commissions opens Wednesday, October 28 at Gray Area. Thirteen artists debut new work built with AI and large-scale cloud computing, moving between scales that rarely meet: a satellite’s planetary view beside a microbial colony, the inside of a neural network opening onto forests and watersheds, a day of visitor conversation becoming a creature’s memory.
Rather than using AI to make more of the same, these artists treat it as a translation layer, letting intelligences of vastly different sizes and speeds sense one another.

Is Bending Spoons technically a private equity firm?
After acquiring Evernote, WeTransfer, Meetup, Vimeo, Splice, and Harvest that's what it's starting to look like 🤔
