AI is not conscious, but more and more it resembles something that’s conscious—a philosophical zombie—and that illusion may convince too many people (“Claude is my friend!”), including the true-believers at Anthropic. Don’t buy into the techno-woo!

If you go to a peaceful protest, and it turns into a riot, and you stay at the riot and participate in the riot it isn't a "mostly peaceful protest", it's a riot and you are a rioter.

The reason France and other European countries are stagnating is because the govts are larger than the private sector. Your simple minded answer is…more government. Truly imbecilic.
From the high schools of France to the streets of Madrid to the universities of Tirana, young people are telling their governments the same thing: in an age of massive wealth inequality, they want a future they can believe in. In France, students and teachers are asking for safe schools, enough teachers and smaller classes. In Spain, for affordable rent and housing. In Albania, for good jobs and an end to corruption. @JDVance says this is what happens when a nation lets in too many immigrants from the global south. He is not just morally wrong, but misreading the moment. The is what happens when nations let wealth and power accumulate in the hands of a few. This is what happens when young people lose hope in their future. In America, let us listen to our young. We need an economic and political transformation. America's Next New Deal.

"Frictionmaxxing" used to be called "having hobbies"
I'm fascinated by the rise of frictionmaxxing as a response to a frictionless life. We engineer away inconvenience, only to discover that some of the friction we removed was part of what made life feel alive in the first place

And when they end up making life harder for everyone, they blame the rich, double down, and act confused when things keep getting worse
Too many people who claim to care about the poor are more interested in making life harder for the rich than making life easier for the poor.

France has FREE health care, paid parental leave, paid family leave, FREE child care, FREE preschool, 5 weeks paid vacation, a 35 hour work week, generous unemployment and housing benefits, and heavily subsidized higher education. Everything the left says they want AND THEY'RE STILL PROTESTING AND BURNING SHIT DOWN.

There’s no way this improves their education system or anything in their country So let’s call these riots what they are: violent tantrums thrown by people who don’t care about their society and are coping with their unchecked emotions by destroying everything
A French video game and cartoon store owner has his store looted in Nice. He gets attacked from behind and then has rocks thrown at him while young rioters laugh

Violent leftists are rioting in Paris because they’ve stopped using their brains and are resorting to primitive ways of coping with their emotions

Students supported Mao Students supported Castro Students supported Khomeini Students supported Hitler Students supported Mussolini If find yourself blindly supporting every student lead movement, you’ll be wrong very often, in many eras, on many issues.
A good rule of history: if you find yourself opposing a student movement while siding with the ruling class, you're wrong. Every time, in every era, whatever the issue.
Community note
Student movements have not always been on the right side of history. Mao's student Red Guards persecuted hundreds of thousands. Students helped Castro and Khomeini rise to power, and Nazi student groups opposed the Weimar Republic. britannica.com/topic/Red-Guar… encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/art… aei.org/education/actu…

Socialism is only good in theory if your theory relies on magic, assumes away human nature, ignores economic reality, and imagines that consequences can be evaded simply because intentions are declared noble.

AI will give us the option to do all kinds of things but we will still choose how to use it AI being able to read to our kids or make art won’t mean we’ll be banned from doing it ourselves if it makes us happy It won’t remove agency or autonomy to make decisions for ourselves
The AI maximalists say that we need AI to do all the jobs so that we can be freed to do more meaningful things like make art and read to our children. But then they also want AI to make art and read to our children. So what exactly will be left for humans to do? The answer, though they won’t admit it, is that we get to be passive consumers sitting around slack jawed staring at screens until we die. That’s the only form of happiness these people can conceive of. It’s all any of us should want, as far as they’re concerned.

People who join mob pile-ons are making the world worse. Whether you're targeting Jane Doe or the seven men, it's not your fucking job to dish out punishment. Leave it to their university and the courts, you rabid lunatics. Mob justice is never justice.
The woman now known to America as Cornell's Jane Doe is increasingly scared for her own safety, her attorney Thomas Giuffra said to CNN as he detailed his client's deteriorating mental state after an escalating series of violent threats. cnn.it/4yzwRQf

When will colleges learn that allowing students to throw massive tantrums over the current news cycle is a bad idea? I guess Cornell will have to learn the hard way…
